A Dhaka court yesterday placed Juba League central leader SM Golam Kibria Shamim on 10-day remand in two separate cases filed on charge of possessing illegal arms and drugs. In another development, Kalabagan Krira Chakra president Shafiqul Alam Feroz, who was arrested last Friday from the club, has been placed on 10-day remand in connection with two cases filed for possessing illegal arms and drugs.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Akhter granted the prayer for Shamim’s remand after the law-enforcers produced him before the court with prayers for 14 days of remand in total in three separate cases filed with Gulshan police station in the city.

Shamim was put on a five-day remand in a case filed under the Firearms Act while another five-day remand was granted in a separate case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.

The court also placed seven bodyguards of Shamim on four-day remand each. The bodyguards were identified as Delowar Hossain, Murad Hossain, Jahidul Islam, Sohidul Islam, Kamal Hossain, Samsad Hossain and Aminul Islam.

Earlier, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) filed three cases against Shamim, who is also a top government-listed contractor. Two cases were filed under the narcotics control and money-laundering acts, and another against Shamim and his seven bodyguards on the charge of creating panic among people by brandishing firearms, said Gulshan police station officer-in-charge (OC), Kamruzzaman.

The police took Shamim and his seven bodyguards to the court and sought 14 days' remand. Till the filing of the report at 7.30pm, it could not be known whether the remand had been granted.

On Friday, RAB raided Shamim’s residence and office in the city’s Niketon area and seized eight firearms, a large amount of ammunition, fixed deposit receipt (FDR) worth Tk. 165 crore and nearly Tk. 2 crore in cash, a large stash of US and Singapore dollars and some foreign liquor, officials said. Seven of his armed bodyguards were also arrested.

GK Shamim is known to be an influential contractor of the Public Works Department and other government organisations.

Soon after his arrest, social media was flooded with photos where he is seen alongside senior Awami League leaders, ministers and former and current police and RAB officials.

His arrest came just two days after Juba League’s Dhaka (South) organising secretary, Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan, was held from his Gulshan home for running a casino at the Fakirerpool Youngmen’s Club in Dhaka.

In the Kalabagan Krira Chakra Club president’s case, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahmuda Akhter passed the order after police produced Shafiqul before the court with a 20-day remand plea in the two cases.

Shafiqul was put on five-day remand in the case under the Firearms Act, and another five-day remand in the case under the Narcotics Control Act.

Earlier in the day, the two cases were filed against Shafiqul with Dhanmondi police station, the officer-in-charge, Abdul Latif, told The Independent.

Members of RAB detained Kalabagan Krira Chakra Club president Shafiqul Alam Feroz and his four associates from the club on Friday night. Members of the

elite force seized a firearm, bullets from their procession.

Gambling chips, foreign pistols, 572 packets of playing cards, yellow yaba tablets and other casino materials were also confiscated during the drive. Later, members of RAB-2 took Feroz into custody for questioning.

Feroz is also an executive committee member of the central Krishak League, a farmers’ body of the Awami League, and senior vice-president of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA).
