Prices of onion and vegetables soared in the city’s kitchen markets owing to inadequate supply. An upward trend was also observed in the prices of broiler chicken and eggs compared to last week.

On visiting different kitchen markets in the capital, including Karwan Bazar, The Independent noted that the price of onion, both Indian and local varieties, had gone up by Tk 30 per kg. The local variety was selling for Tk 80 per kg and the Indian varieties were fetching Tk 70 a kg. Only a few days back, they were retailing for Tk 45–50 per kg.

Sulaiman Miah, an onion seller at Karwan Bazar, blamed the price rise on India’s decision to curb exports. “There is nothing we can do. We are forced to sell at high prices because we have to buy at high rates,” he said.

To control the prices in the local markets, the government has started selling onion at Tk 45 per kg through the state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, vegetable vendors noted an increase in the supply of winter vegetables like beans, cauliflower, and radish. They, however, said the peak season was yet to start. They expect the prices to come down shortly, possibly from the end of September.

However, buyers have expressed annoyance over the high prices of winter vegetables.

Other vegetables have not been spared either. Papaya, snake gourd, pointed gourd, ridge gourd, sponge gourd, eddo, okra, and bitter gourd saw price increases of Tk 5–10 a kg. Leafy vegetables, ash gourds, and bottle gourds have become dearer by Tk 3–10 per piece or bunch.

Tomatoes were selling for Tk 90–100 per kg, eggplants for Tk 60–80, bitter gourds for Tk 70–80, cucumbers for Tk 60–80, ridge gourds for Tk 80, okra for Tk 60, and potatoes for Tk 25 a kg.

The price of green chillies remained unchanged at Tk. 100 per kg, while garlic was selling for Tk 140–160 per kg.

Shariful Islam, a businessman from the Khilgaon kitchen market, said: “Vegetable prices may start coming down from next week. But they could increase if it continues to rain for a few days.”

The price of broiler chicken increased to Tk 150 per kg despite last week’s retail price of Tk 130–135. Red eggs were selling for Tk 110 per dozen, up from Tk 100 last week.

The price of a piece of hilsa weighing between 400 and 500 gm was between Tk 550–600. Traders said a piece of hilsa weighing around 800–900 gm was being sold for Tk. 900–1,000. Last week, a piece of hilsa weighing one kg came with a price tag of around Tk 1100–1,200 while a medium-sized hilsa sold for Tk 550–Tk. 900.

At the kitchen markets yesterday, large lobsters fetched Tk 1,000 per kg, while rohu sold for Tk 250–260 per kg, tilapia for Tk 130 per kg, and katla for Tk 260 per kg.
