Targeting the next ICC Twenty20 World Cup, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is carrying out experiments through the present series and tournaments so that they can pick the right players for the 2020 extravaganza. This was stated by the BCB president, Nazmul Hassan Papon, to The Independent during the Bangladesh-Zimbabwe match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Wednesday.

The 20-over flagship event will be played Down Under between October 18 and November 15, 2020. Admitting loopholes and lackings in the previous planning for domestic cricket, Papon said they took those games as experiments so that they could at least try out players to see their talent and potential.

“It must be kept in mind that our main target is the next Twenty20 World Cup. As time is short, we are trying to observe many players within this short span of time. Yes, we are searching for a leg-spinner. Except Aminul Islam, others in our hands were unavailable due to injury. So, we got Aminul and played him,” Papon told this reporter.

“But the biggest problem is, at the club level they do not get a chance to play. They are deprived even in the national league. No one played them in the BPL,” he added. The BCB president said if they don’t get a chance to play, how will they prepare themselves for international cricket.

“If we do not get them to play, how will they improve. Their scope of playing is limited. This is why we are trying them out in these tournaments. We have no other way,” he said. The BCB chief accused the domestic clubs of having no plan to develop leg-spinners and better batsmen. He said the board has planned to organise the next edition of the BPL Twenty20 Tournament to spot quality players for the Twenty20 squad.

He said local players are deprived as there are foreign players. Describing the system as harmful to their game, the president said local players should be given a chance.

“Our players used to open the batting, but foreign players have blocked their chances. The BPL does not benefit our local players. So, this year we have thought that we will form the teams in such a way that local players get more chance and find out new and quality players,” he added.
