People living in Chalitabunia Union of Rangabali Upazila of Patuakhali are facing an uncertain future because of severe river erosion.

While visiting the area, this correspondent found that about a four-km stretch of the embankment from Garuvanga village to the north of the union to Chay village to south of the union had been devoured by the Agunmukha river.

More than three hundred residential houses, cropland, trees and plants have been ravaged by the river. About 3,000 families living by the riverside are living in fear. The Chalitabunia bazar, Union Parishad building, secondary and primary schools, mosques, madrasas, health centres, and cyclone shelters are also under threat from the erosion caused by the river.

Locals have said the erosion increases during the monsoon, when the Agunmukha river unleashes it fury on the banks.

“If a dam is not built immediately, the Chalitabunia UP may be wiped out from the map of Rangabali upazila. Thousands of families will be badly affected. Erosion has also threatened coastal fisheries and agricultural resources,” said a local resident.

Chitabunia Union panel chairman Muhammad Rana Howlader said, “The Chalitabunia UP complex-cum-cyclone shelter built by the Red Crescent Society is gradually being swallowed by the river. If the government doesn’t take any action immediately, the entire Chaitabunia union will disappear.”

Rangabali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mashfaqur Rahman said: “We’ve already written to the authorities concerned.

Necessary steps will be taken as per instructions from them.”
