SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka
Bangladesh to build specialised disability-friendly boats

Bangladesh will build and supply specialised disability-friendly boats in the country’s all disaster-prone districts and upazilas within next 10 years while the government is also likely to set a physiotherapy institute named ‘Bangabandhu Physical Therapy Institute’ in the country.

The decision came from the fourth meeting of the ‘National Taskforce on Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Management,’ held at the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry with its Chairman and State Minister For Disaster Management and Relief Dr Enamur Rahman in the chair yesterday.

Committee’s chief advisor Saima Hossain, also chairperson of Bangladesh National Advisory Committee for Autism and Neuro-developmental Disorders and winner of “WHO Champion for Autism” in South-East Asia, and other committee members attended the meeting.

The dockyard of Bangladesh Navy will build the boat and supply within the next 10 years.

Initially 60 boats will be built in next three years – 20 boats in every year – following the approved design of the framework. Tk 45 lakh will be needed to build each of the boats, the state minister added.

To establish Bangabandhu Physical Therapy Institute to provide therapy supports to the physically challenged people, Chili government will provide the necessary financial support.

A proposal of the Chili government to establish such an institute was given approval too yesterday during the meeting.

In the meeting, Saima Hossain, also the daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, praised the progress of the committee to achieve its previous target to implement the decisions and commitments of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (Sendai Framework) and Dhaka Declaration and Disaster Risk Reduction.

The meeting also decided to hold the next meeting on Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2020 in Indonesia.

Dhaka will be given necessary technical support to hold the meeting smoothly, State Minister Enamur Rahman told reporters after the meeting.
