DNCC eviction drive from Sept 20

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
DNCC eviction drive from Sept 20

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will conduct special eviction drives in different areas under its jurisdiction to free the roadsides and footpaths from illegal establishments from September 20.

The drive will be started from city’s Uttara area.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam announced the eviction drive while inaugurating drainage pipeline extension and footpaths widening programme in Uttara area yesterday.

Atiqul said, “We will launch an eviction drive against illegal occupiers of footpaths and roadside from September 20.” The mayor said, “We will remove the illegal occupation establishment from the pavement. It will start from Uttara and then will be in every area.”

Calling for pedestrians to walk on the pavements instead of the main road, the mayor said that now commuters are walking on the road because the footpaths are occupied. If the footpath is freed then you can no longer walk along the road. Then you have to walk through the pavements.

The illegal settlements are obstructing the roads and footpaths. So, people face immense sufferings to move easily, he added.

He also said that such drives would be continued to keep the roads and footpaths of the city free from illegal settlements.

Seeking the help of the people to get rid of illegal occupants, the mayor said that eradication of illegal establishment is a challenge.

“I freed today and a vested quarter will sit here again tomorrow. We have seen such kind of incidents before.

That is why we will start the campaign in one area and after finish we will start another area. In this way I can make the pavement free.

I want the public's help in this regard. I want public by my side,” he said.

Following the inauguration by the mayor, a drainage pipeline and footpath widening works have started from Shaista Khan Avenue in Sector 4 to Isha Khan Avenue at Sector 6 in Uttara under IDRC project.

The purpose of this project is to get rid of water logging on the east side of Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and the various roads of sector 4 of Uttara. This project is being implemented at a cost of Tk 35.47 crore.
