BCB to ramp up domestic cricket and players’ fitness

The new cricket season of the domestic circuit (2019-2020) is going to begin from October 21.

This time, the 21st edition of the NCL will start with the National Cricket League (NCL), the country's first-class domestic cricket competition. Keeping the new cricket season in mind, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is trying to arrange all domestic cricket leagues in a more organised way so as to produce quality players to address the upcoming challenges of international cricket.

The BCB is considering to take some effective steps to make domestic cricket more competitive and create a pool more talented players.

As part of this plan, the country’s cricket apex body is going to put more stress on physical fitness of players as only fit players can play the longer version of the game and compete with the very best without breaking down.

According to BCB insiders, the board might set a minimum score for the bleep test for players.

Experts often allege that the quality of the domestic leagues is deteriorating, with mostly unfit players playing those matches. The board is thinking of ways to improve the standard of such leagues so that they can produce the quality and physically fit players.

The ICC has recently introduced the World Test Championship (WTC) to popularise the longer version of the game, besides men's and women's one-day and Twenty20 World Cups. The board said that it has enough players under their radar. Many of the players who scored 11–13 in their bleep tests can be chosen at any level because of their fine fitness levels.

In that case, the bleep test of the players for the NCL will be held between September 15-20.

National team's discarded batsman Shariar Nafees informed that he is preparing for the ensuing NCL.

“I am preparing for the NCL because this is the only tournament for which we are all eagerly waiting for,” said Nafees, who hailed from Dhaka to give commentary for the Bangladesh-Afghanistan Test.

“There are fitness tests for players. The test sessions will be held during September 15-17,” he told The Independent.

By changing its policy regarding fitness, the BCB can get rid of outside influences and single out those are reluctant to work on their fitness levels. After introducing the criterion of fitness, all unfit players will be scraped right from the initial stage. As a result, only the fit and eligible players will take part in the competition.

Along with that, the BCB is mulling to introduce naming and numbering the players behind the jersey in the aspects of Test Cricket. It is trying to make sure the domestic competition this season is held in a festive mood than its past editions.
