Deadlock on, teachers observe work abstention

A section of Jahangirnagar University (JU) teachers yesterday observed work abstention and staged sit-in in front of old registrar building to protest alleged corruption of the authorities and unplanned development work on the campus. As part of prescheduled programme, over 50 teachers under the platform “Jahangirnagar against Corruption” brought out a protest procession from the Arts and Humanities Faculty building around at 11am.

The rally ended on the old administrative building premises after parading different roads on the campus. Speakers at the rally demanded to relocate three male students’ dormitories which are planned to be constructed near Rabindranath Hall, and a judicial enquiry into corruption and tender snatching.  Professor Mirza Taslima Sultana of Anthropology department, said, “The vice-chancellor (VC) is supposed to be the guardian of a university. When allegations are published in the newspapers involving her name, we cannot accept it at all.”

Professor Anu Muhammad of Economics department said, “Big budget brings big disaster. If irregularities noticed in big budget, then it brings big disasters. And, irregularities in small allocation may cause the little disaster.”

“As a result, this mega development plan may create the possibilities of prosperity as well as its may be matter of concern. This peril may be crushed the university’s resource and prosperity”, he added.  

He urged the chancellor of the university, who also president of Bangladesh, UGC and Education Ministry to take initiative to resolve the crisis.

Meanwhile, over a hundred students staged a demonstration that brought out from the Social Science Faculty premises and ended at the old administrative building to attend the gatherings of the teachers. Students expressed solidarity with the teachers programme there.

Earlier, they staged a street drama ‘Akti Non-Fiction’ by Jahangirnagar Theatre around 12:30pm on Social Science Faculty premises. Spokesperson of ‘Jahangirnagar against Corruption’ Ashikur Rahman said, “We will continue protest every day on the campus in this week. We will compel to go for tougher movement if our demand is not met”.  

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League of the university unit staged a demonstration on the campus protesting the administration’s decision about Ahbishekh, organising secretary of JU BCL. They brought out a protest procession.
