Three veterans to get Altaf Mahmud Award

Three veterans will be honoured with the Altaf Mahmud Award this year on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the latter’s disappearance day on August 30. Noted cultural personality Kamal Lohani, Architect Farid Uddin Ahmed and Architect Md Jami al Shaf—the two designers of Rayarbajar Memorial, will be bestowed with the prestigious award conferred by Shahid Altaf Mahmud Foundation.

The award ceremony, followed by a cultural programme, will be held tomorrow at 5pm at the Music and Dance Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

Attending the event as the chief guest, State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid will hand over the awards to the recipients.

Altaf Mahmud (December 23, 1933– September, 1971) was a musician, cultural activist and martyred freedom fighter of the Bangladesh Liberation War. During a combing operation (on August 30, 1971) in Dhaka by the Pakistan army, Mahmud was arrested and believed to have been killed in September of that year.

To remember and pay respect to the legend, who earned huge popularity for his iconic song ‘Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February’, Shahid Altaf Mahmud Foundation confers the Altaf Mahmud Award every year on August 30.
