Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman yesterday said the proposal for establishing economic zones in Dohar-Nawabganj area of Dhaka has been approved by the government and these will be implemented soon. “At first, we thought of establishing one economic zone. But when we submitted our proposal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, she gave approval for two economic zones,” the PM’s adviser said. Salman F Rahman, also the MP of Dhaka-1 (Dohar-Nawabganj) constituency, had promised to establish an economic zone in the area during his election campaigning last year. He was speaking as the guest of honour at a programme titled “Anti-terrorism, militancy and anti-drug drives”, organised by the Nababganj Thana Community Police at Nababganj Pilot High School. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal attended the programme as the chief guest.

“All the works that I had promised before the election have started. I have already taken an allocation from the government for reconstructing the dilapidated roads of Nababganj area. For dredging the two rivers in our upazila, I have taken an allocation of Tk. 500 crore,” the PM adviser told the people.

The Dhaka-1 MP also said he wanted to present Nababganj as a model upazila in front of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He urged the people of Nababganj to take oath to fight against terrorism, militancy and drug.

At the programme, around 100 drug dealers and users of Nababganj and Dohar promised to return to normal life.

Earlier on July 25, 2018, a total of 25 drug dealers and users had promised to get back to normal life. Among them, 15 have actually come back to normal life. They were given sewing machines and vans at the programme.

Shaheda Begum and Shiblur Rahman, two former drug peddlers, reflected on their previous lives. They promised to continue leading a clean life in future. They thanked Nababganj police for their rehabilitation.

Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal said Bangladesh has established itself as a role model in curbing militancy in front of the world.

He also said the defeated forces of the 1971 war had wanted to turn Bangladesh into a failed state, but they did not succeed as the people rejected militancy.

“The people of Bangladesh believe in communal harmony. But we have to remain vigilant so that no new militant force can emerge,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Inspector General of Police Javed Patwari said the police are waging a daily war against terrorists, militants and drug dealers.

Habibur Rahman, DIG of Dhaka range, Abu Saleh Mohammad Ferdous Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka, Mahbubur Rahman of Dhaka District Council, Nasir Uddin Ahmed, chairman of Nababganj upazila, Alamgir Hossain, chairman of Dohar upazila, among others, were present at the programme as guests.
