STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Two more die of dengue

Two more people died of dengue in Dhaka and Madaripur yesterday. In Dhaka, a man died of dengue at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) around 1:00am. The deceased, Fazlur Rahman (55), is a resident of Gopalganj. Meanwhile, in a press conference at the DGHS head office in the capital yesterday Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) director Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora said that they have received information about the deaths of 169 people in dengue outbreak. At present, the institute is scrutinising the information to confirm that those deaths happened due to dengue. Flora also said they have scrutinized 80 such cases and confirmed 47 dengue deaths so far. She also said that 1,299 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals in Dhaka and outside in the last 24 hours. Al Fayed Nobel, nephew of the deceased, said: “My uncle was admitted to DMCH on August 23 after he was diagnosed with dengue.  He died in the hospital while undergoing treatment.”

In Madaripur, a woman died of dengue around 10pm on August 24 on her way to Dhaka from Shibchar Upazila Health Complex. The deceased, Sumi Akter (30), is a resident of Kanthalbari Ghat in Shibchar. Dr Abdul Mokaddes, the upazila family planning officer, told the media that Sumi was admitted to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex on August 20. He also said that her condition deteriorated on August 24 evening and she was referred to Dhaka for better treatment. “With the latest casualty, the death toll has increased to eight in the district,” he said.  Till August 17 this year, dengue patients in the country have spent an estimated Tk. 2.04 billion on treatment and related expenses, according to a study conducted by Dhaka University’s Institute of Health Economics. The study, however, did not take into account the cost which the government has incurred due to dengue.

The Health Emergency Operations Centre and the control room at the DGHS said as many as 63,514 dengue patients were hospitalized across Bangladesh since January 1 till 8 am on August 25. Altogether 47 patients died of dengue since January 1 till August 24, says DGHS data. However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be over 111. According to DGHS control room data, 57,405 patients have already been released from hospitals and 3,268 people are being treated in Dhaka’s 41 government and private hospitals. The number is 2,672 outside Dhaka.
