BCB has to show patience to get quality leg-spinners

Leg-spin coach Waheedul Gani thinks Bangladesh will get a leggie not before the next 50-over World Cup

BCB has to show patience to get quality leg-spinners

Every team in world cricket tries how to tame its opponents in competition, where bowling variations play a vital role in their win-loss. And in this race, right-arm (leg) spinner is considered a lethal weapon among the other spin bowlers irrespective of wickets and conditions.

It is seen one or more leg spinners in every team from the top-notch to mediocre teams for its importance. Currently, Afghanistan leg-spin prodigy Rashid Khan enthralled the world cricket with his sheer magic of leg-spin what once used to see in bowling legendary Shane Warne (Australia), Abdul Qadir (Pakistan) and Anil Kumble (India), who all keep batsmen in panic with their eye-catching googly, slider, flipper, quicker ball, top spinner, leg break.

There were some more leg-spinners the likes of Mushtaq Ahmed and Danish Kaneria (Pakistan), Staurt MacGill, Richie Benaud and Bill O’Reilly (Australia), B S Chandrasekhar and Shubhash Gupte (India), Clarrie Grimmett (New Zealand). There were some other short-lived leg-spinners such as Saeed Azmal and Yasir Shah (Pakistan). Imran Tahir (South Africa), who retired from international cricket along with Yuzvendra Chahal (India), Adam Zampa (Australia), Adil Rashid (England) and Shadab Khan (Pakistan) are in current line-up.

Local spin coach Waheedul Gani acknowledged the axiomatic truth, and hinted that they should start the process of producing a leg-spinner without making any delay. If they could start the process right away, he believes, they will see at least a couple of quality leg spinners within the next few years in Bangladesh cricket.

“Wicket-taking in modern day cricket has become very important in every game regardless of Test, One-Day and T20 formats. Normally, our conception is those who are wicket-taking bowlers are coming from right-arm (leg) spinners. But there are wicket-taking bowlers out of it such as off-spinner and left-arm spinner,” said Waheedul Gani.

“As right-arm (leg) spinners in other countries are dominating, the question has come to the fore why we’ve not any such right-arm spinner. It might be those who are our wicket-taking bowlers are all off-spinners. But if we can build up a leg-spinner, it might benefit us because the ball of a right-arm spinner turns and bounces a bit more than other types of bowlers. So, we’ve to give emphasis more on them,” Gani told The Independent.

The mentality and the culture they grow year after year, Waheedul said, that was a big barrier of producing a leg-spinner in the country. And so, he said that they have to desert such mentality and provide more chances for a leg spinner to grow up him.

He blamed for the dearth of the initiative and stated that they are yet to start the process what is necessary to produce a leg-spinner. If they can do so, he hopes, they can get a leg-spinner within the next two years.

“Now we’re all telling that we’ve no leg-spinner but how it’s possible to get such type of bowler. For this, we have to have a process of it what we’ve not. Even we’re yet to start it. I’ve been witnessing since 30-40 years, no one would understand the significance of right-arm spinner in that time and even in the present day. If they would understand, they let them play,” he said.

“There are so many young right-arm spinners here. I think if we can nurture them, we’ll also get right-arm spinner within the next one and half-a-years. But it’s a matter of regret that we’ve no such process. None wants to play them at any level of cricket-junior level, club cricket and senior level. It becomes such that everybody wants to win only. Nobody comes to take a risk,” he also said.

“We’ve age-group tournament, where we can try with right-arm spinners. Even we can accommodate them in the National Cricket League whose ownership under our cricket board, the meet where win-loss is not a big factor. If we can try with them in those tournaments and we can proceed in the right way, we can then get right-arm spinners,” he added.

Citing the names of some legendary leg-spinners like Rashid Khan, Shane Warne and Abdul Qadir, Gani said that they probably will not produce such stature of leg-spinners because they are all god-gifted but they will produce a good leg-spinner if they try and start the process what is important to produce a leg spinner.

“Everybody expects a leg-spinner like Rashid Khan, Shane Warne and Abdul Qadir. But they are natural and god-gifted bowlers. None can be like them,” he said. “Even we never make anyone like them. But if we try to produce a quality leg-spinner, we can do it. If it would be possible, Australia will then pick so many Shane Warne. So, we’ve to understand who is he and who has potential,” the spin coach also said.

The coach said that they have to give more chances to them to play matches in domestic tournaments whatever the level is. He said that leg-spinner will not give success in initial period but all have to wait for success.

“Our cricket is such that everybody wants to win only. When you go to make a right-arm (leg) spinner, you’ll not get success initially. You’ll get its reward in the next time. For this, you have to keep patience. You’ve to let him or them play,” he said.

Citing the instance of Abdul Qadir, he said that Qadir was leg spinner, who told he would not be Abdul Qadir if Allah and Imran Khan would not support him because Imran Khan always backs him. Selectors would not pick him but Imran Khan has taken him.

“We needed such kind of people, who will understand the significance of a leg spinner and showed courage to let him play. A selection criterion has to be relaxed for leg-spinner. To form a team with leg-spinner, a question often come to the fore where he plays and what he does. We have to play raw and new leg-spinners. We see what they do after playing some matches. We can accommodate four leg-spinners in four teams to see them what they are doing.”

“Definitely, our purpose will be served. I think there are so many leg-spinners around us who have enough potential to stun all. Right-arm spinners needed some sympathy to prove their worth. The bowling of the right-arm spinner may be expensive but they will give you the much-needed breakthrough.”

He said that they have a host of young leg-spinners from where they can get quality leg-spinner for the national team within the next four years.

“In age group, we’ve some right-arm (leg) spinners. We’ve two leg-spinners in High Performance (HP), one of whom is an all-rounder and other is sheer right-arm (leg) spinner. In such a way, if we can pick and nurse them in proper way by giving them a chance to play matches, we’ll definitely get potential leg-spinner for the national team within the next four years,” he informed.

Citing Tanvir Haider and Jubair Hossain Likhon’s names, Waheedul said they can’t nurture them properly because they brought them in cricket before the start of the full-fledged process.

“Tanvir Haider is an all-rounder. He bats along with leg-spin but he has a lack of speed and turns what are much-needed for the international cricket. He can play as an all-rounder as he can bat with bowl a bit sometimes,” he said of Tanvir Haider.

“Likhon has potential but system has damaged him. Before his preparedness, he has given the chance of playing international matches. The process has not been followed in case of Likhon which was more important for a leg-spinner. He has given an early break. He has given him so early chance not to play longer version cricket. As a result, his talent has been spoiled,” he said of Jubair Likhon.

“Still he is good. The ingredient he has is needed for a leg-spinner. We can use him but it’s a matter of time,” he added.

Expressing his regret, the veteran spin coach said that he didn’t make any leg-spinner so long because he works with those who are sent by the selectors and management. But he also said that if anyone from the country can establish himself in international cricket, it’d be very much satisfactory for him.

“Normally I look after those spinners who are referred  by selectors. I’ve no scope to select any leg-spinner. I just train them what they’ll send. The art we have in stock should work us with them closely. We can hold a camp with right-arm spinners. We’ve two boys that we can make it four. We’ve left-arm spinners and off-spinners. We've got to go through a process,” he said.

“Definitely, I’ve regrets. But I firmly believe that a right-arm spinner from Bangladesh will establish him in international cricket,” he viewed.

“It’s a sorrow that no one can yet to be flourished. I think, we have young leg-spinner. But it’s a matter of patience for all sides whether it selectors, management, crowd,” he concluded.
