BCB plans to groom more pacers for Test cricket

Keeping ICC Test Championship in mind, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu said that the board has given more priority to produce a bunch of fast bowlers to strengthen the country’s pipeline for longer version of cricket.

In an exclusive interview at his Mohammadpur residence in the capital Nannu said, we are in a desperate need of some genuine fast bowlers for Test cricket and we are working on that specific area to fix those players for longer version of cricket.

“When we go abroad,  it’s pressure that always works for pacers as they need to bowl longer spells in the both innings. It’s very challenging. Regarding this, we need some confident fast bowlers who can concentrate more on lengthy bowling spells based on their ability, strength to represent the country’s white jersey’’, he said.

“We have been working this way. We are nursing 13 fast bowlers from HP team and others. And of them we are trying to find out at least five genuine pacers. If we can fix them especially for Test cricket, it will be a great achievement for us’’, he added. Clarifying BCB XI's tour in India Nannu said, Mini Ranji Trophy is a competitive tournament because all the opponents are quite strong there. This year our boys played good cricket in the tournament compared to our performances in 2014 when we lost 4 matches despite 50-60 per cent of our national/A team players featured in that competition.

“Though we lost in the semi-final, it was a successful tour for us. We found 4/5 players who played really well in the tournament. They played at different venues, on different tracks there and gather invaluable experiences of how to play against stronger teams in different conditions’’, he further explained.

‘’A total of 7/8 players (5 from BCB XI, 2 from A team and 1 from HP team) performed well in three events the boys have played and I think it’s enough to have 5/7 players in our pipeline because we can replace them when someone isn’t in good form or gets injured’’, he added.

Giving importance to the ICC Test Championship he said, it's a huge opportunity for players to grab that. Our batting and spin department have been reasonably good. They are in good shape and performing well. But, since I previously said our main concern is to find some quick bowlers, we are moving forward with that specific plan to get some of those for the longer format of cricket and hopefully we’ll implement our plan from the upcoming Afghanistan Test, he concluded.
