Tagore’s 78th death anniv to be observed today

DL DESK, Dhaka
Tagore’s 78th death anniv to be observed today

The 78th death anniversary of Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore will be observed today (22 Sraban-according to Bangla calendar).

Born on May 7 in 1861 at Jorasanko in Kolkata, Tagore was the fountainhead of Bengali literature, culture and wisdom.

Nobody has influenced the minds of so many Bengali-speaking people as he has done. His influence has been compared by many to that of Shakespeare in the English-speaking world. Tagore received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. People know Tagore mainly as a poet, but his literary works include essays, short stories, travelogues, dramas, and thousands of songs. He was also an expert painter.

For Bangladesh, Tagore holds special significance. His poems and songs inspired the nation during its most difficult years. One of his songs, ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’ (My Golden Bengal), was chosen as Bangladesh’s national anthem.

Different cultural organisations are all set to observe the day with various programmes.

Bangla Academy will hold a solo lecture and a cultural function at the Poet Shamsur Rahman Seminar Hall on the academy premises at 4pm today. Presided over by National Professor Anisuzzaman, Professor Syed Azizul Haque will deliver a speech at the event.

Cultural organisation Chhayanaut will organise an array of programmes featuring dance, songs and discussion at 7pm on its premises in Dhanmondi.

On the other hand, marking the occasion, Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha arranged a two-day music festival titled ‘Somukhe Shanti Parabar’ held at the Shawkat Osman Auditorium of Central Public Library on

August 2 and 3.
