University of Dhaka (DU) conferred this year’s ‘Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal’ on Folk Queen-famed singer Farida Parveen. The singer received the award at a function at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of DU yesterday.

Attending as the chief guest, vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Md Akhtaruzzaman handed over the award and cheque worth Tk.1 lakh to Parveen at the programme marking the birth anniversary (July 28) of late iconic Nazrul Sangeet Singer Feroza Begum.

Presided over by treasurer and chairperson of Feroza Begum Memorial Trust Fund Professor Kamal Uddin, DU Arts Faculty Dean Professor Abu Mohammad Delwar Hossain was present as special guest.

Professor Akhtaruzzaman thanked the chairman of the ACI Foundation M Anis Ud Dowla for patronising the Feroza Begum Memorial Trust Fund and extended his hope that the next generation of the music artistes would be inspired by this endeavour.

On the other hand, Khondaker Anika Islam, a student of Dhaka University’s Music Department has been nominated for the same award for achieving the highest CGPA in BA Honours.

Thanking the DU for choosing her for the award, singer Parveen said, “I am really honoured to receive an award named after Feroza Apa (Feroza Begum). I feel proud of it.”

Feroza Begum’s brother M Anis Ud Dowla praised the DU authority for their initiative in his speech. He recalled the memories of singer Feroza Begum’s contribution, sacrifice and devotion towards the music.

Since 2016, DU has introduced the ‘Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal’ to keep the name of Feroza Begum alive. It is mentionable that noted singers like Sabina Yasmin, Rezwana Choudhury Bannya and Runa Laila were awarded with the Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal by the university consecutively in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In addition, the best students of the music department of Dhaka University were awarded for the same.

Feroza Begum died on September 9 in 2014.
