Urging the people to have patience, Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said the government has been working sincerely to control the dengue outbreak that took a serious turn this year. “We are serious about curbing the dengue outbreak. We have this as a challenge. The process of bringing effective insecticides is going on. Everything will be normal soon. Just have patience,” he said.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, was talking to the media before conducting the AL-led countrywide cleanliness campaign to create dengue awareness among the people. He was speaking at the party's central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city yesterday. Replying to a query over bringing effective insecticides to check Aedes mosquitoes, the minister said: “We are now receiving suggestions from experts that ineffective insecticides should not be imported. Effective chemical for curbing dengue is being brought as per the suggestions of experts. We must have patience. There is no lack of sincerity here.”

“The dengue situation has taken a serious turn in the country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now on an official visit in London, is also worried about the dengue situation. But it’s not out of control yet,” he said.

The AL general secretary said it cannot be denied that dengue has spread all over the country.

He said the health ministry, the local government ministry and the city corporations are working in a coordinated way as per the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes and control the dengue outbreak.

The AL has taken action programmes to engage people in tackling the dengue situation, he added.

The minister said there is no lack of Medicare facilities as people are receiving treatment round the clock at hospitals.

He also criticised BNP leaders for giving only lip service instead of taking any effective measures to control the dengue outbreak.

AL joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, AL organising secretaries—deputy minister for water resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shamim, deputy minister for education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, BM Mozammel Haque and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, AL science and technology affairs secretary Abdus Sabur, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, information and research secretary Afjal Hossain, Dhaka ciity (south) AL president Abul Hasnat and generalsSecretary Shahe Alam Murad were present on the occasion.
