Best aquaculture practice can boost fish production, export: Experts

Academics and experts at a post-rally discussion said best aquaculture practice can boost safe fish production and its export abroad.

They also viewed that adequate measures need to be taken to bring all the fish growers, traders, feed manufactures, sellers and others concerned under necessary training to enhance their awareness in this field.

Department of Fisheries in Rajshahi University (RU) organized the discussion at its lecture gallery in observance of the National Fisheries Week’ 2019 yesterday afternoon.

RU Vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan addressed the meeting as the chief guest while Pro-VCs Prof Ananda Kumar Shaha and Prof Chowdhury Jakaria spoke as special guests with Chairman of the department Prof Fowzia Edib Flora in the chair.

Dean of Agriculture Faculty Prof Shaleha Jeshmin, Student Adviser Prof Laila Arjuman Banu and Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman also spoke.

Prof Abdus Sobhan said all stakeholders including fish farmers, hatchery owners, fish sellers, meal manufacturers and sellers, field level fisheries officers and staff should work together to ensure safe fish production.

He said safe fish production and its marketing have become a big challenge at present.

To this end, emphasis should be given to safe fish farming besides enhancing its production through the best use of hygienic fish feed, he said.

Time has come to forge a social resistance against the manufacturing of adulterated and unhygienic fish meals, its marketing and use of formalin in fishes, he added.
