Mash, Saifuddin to miss SL tour for injury

Mash, Saifuddin to miss SL tour for injury

Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has been ruled out from playing in the upcoming Sri Lanka tour after suffering a hamstring injury yesterday. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has picked Tamim Iqbal to lead the team during the tour in absence of Mashrafe. All-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin will also be missing the tour due to injury. Tasking Ahmed and Farhad Reza have been brought into the Tigers squad in place of the two injured players.  Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu confirmed this to The Independent.

Mashrafe was practicing bowling when his old hamstring injury recurred, forcing him to return to the dressing room yesterday evening.

Chief Physician of BCB Dr Debashish Roy Chowdhury told reporters that Mashrafe was suffering from a recurring hamstring injury on his right foot. “The injury is quite serious and Mashrafe cannot be allowed to play in the Sri Lanka series,” he said. The condition of Mashrafe was communicated to the board officials, Dr Debashish added.

The names of a replacement player for Mashrafe and new captain of Bangladesh team for the Sri Lanka tour may be announced today, said sources.

Mashrafe, before the recently-concluded World Cup, said that this 50-over World Cup in England will be his last World Cup.

Since then, the situation stands in such a way that each series or tournament may be the last for him. This time the same question comes to the fore before his departure for the ODI series in Sri Lanka. But Mashrafe once again told that he is yet to think about his retirement from international cricket.

“It’s such what others take it. But I can’t say about my part right now because I am yet to think about it,” said Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, who recurred his injury yesterday evening what he received in Ireland.

Addressing a pre-tour press meet at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur before joining yesterday’s practice session, Mashrafe said, “I’m going there (Sri Lanka) to play so I am thinking only to play the series there.”

“And then, we have no games for such a long time. It’s also a matter. But If anything happens, I will then think about it after coming back,” he had said.

“May be it is a news for you all. But it’s not to me. Cricket is many things to me. So, we have to think about it taking some more times.”

This time the mercurial captain reiterated his words what he said at his pre-World Cup presser, even in different occasions in the World Cup that the tour in Sri Lanka is his last tour in the island nation.

“I can say that Sri Lanka will be the last game for me as I have no game in the meantime. I’m going to Sri Lanka for the last time, what I said unlike the World Cup,” he said. “I’ll get times after coming back from Sri Lanka. Then I will think about it (his retirement),” he concluded.

However, after yesterday’s injury, it may be that Mashrafe would not make another visit to Sri Lanka as the Tigers’ captain.
