Probe body finds anomalies of Tk 36.40cr

A committee formed to investigate the irregularities at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) has found anomalies of Tk 36.40 crore in purchase of furniture and other household items for its officials and other employees.

The body submitted its report to the High Court yesterday, sources at the Attorney General’s office. The probe committee formed by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works also recommended punishment for 50 peoples, including Public Works Department (PWD) Executive Engineer Md Masudul Alam.

Earlier on May 19, Barrister Sayedul Haque Suman filed a writ petition with the High Court, seeking a judicial inquiry into the allegations of irregularities in purchasing furniture and other items for the RNPP apartments. On May 20, the High Court ordered the submission of an investigation report by the PWD on the abnormally high cost of furnishing apartments at the RNPP project. The Ministry of Housing and PWD formed two probe committees to investigate the allegations.

According to a media report that went viral on social media, the purchasing prices of various household articles used to furnish the RNPP project apartments were abnormally higher than the market price.

The purchases were made to furnish 966 apartments constructed for the Russian engineers and officials working on the project.
