Mash to lead Tigers in SL series

SPORTS REPORTER, DHAKA
Mash to lead Tigers in SL series

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) selector Habibul Bashar Sumon poured cold water over the speculation that Mashrafe Bin Mortaza might scrape the upcoming tour in Sri Lanka due to his injury.

Bangladesh ODI captain played the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales with injury. Upon his return to the country, Mashrafe’s injury concern that spread the speculation around country’s cricket arena that he might not tour to Sri Lanka with the team.

Clarifying the current state of Mashrafe, selector Sumon said that Mashrafe is fit to tour to Sri Lanka with the team for the ensuing bilateral series.

“I think he is fit. Mashrafe’s fitness totally depends on himself,” said Habibul Bashar Sumon.

“After all, he has to go through a fitness test as there are few concerns about his injury because he played World Cup with injury,” Sumon told media after holding a closed-door meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur yesterday.

“Within this period, he got some time to recover from it. Hopefully he will be fit further before the tour of Sri Lanka,” he added.

BCB director Khaled Mahmud Sujon, BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury, its chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu and captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza ‘among others’ were also attended the meeting.

“We haven’t got anything like that he wouldn’t play the series,” Bashar told in response to another media query.

When asked about the absence of some players in the Sri Lanka tour, the selector said that Liton informed us to take leave from the Sri Lanka tour because of his marriage ceremony. But he said that they are in tether about Shakib Al Hasan’s participation. He also said that it was told them from the board to keep two options for Shakib.

“Today we sat to discuss the matter because if we do not get any of them we’ve to take their replacement. Liton asked for leave because he is getting married,” he said of Liton Kumar Das.

“And Shakib probably asked for a leave earlier but that is not confirmed yet. But we are asked to keep both options in hand. We’ve thought about it in that way. We’ve not got the final report yet because they did not come to us finally,” He also said of Shakib Al Hasan.

“We know that Liton already took the leave. But we’re not sure about Shakib yet whether he would tour or not.  For this, we have kept an option for him,” he added.

Finally Sumon said that they will send their best possible team in the upcoming three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka.

“They’ve returned home after a protracted tour. They had needed some more rest what they got. I think, all needed to be fresh before touring to Sri Lanka. That will definitely be beneficial for us,” he said.

“There are some of the players who had injury concerns but we are yet to get those reports. Of course, Mahmudullah has injury concern. Mashrafe has also a bit injury concern. Mushfiq has also a bit of injury concern. But as far as we know, they all will tour but we’re yet to get report,” he also said.

“Moreover, we needed to start the series afresh. We hope that we will get all sound so we could do tour with our best possible team,” he concluded.

However, BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu said that they will finalise the Tigers’ squad for the imminent away series in Sri Lanka within the next two days.

Bangladesh are all set to fly to Sri Lanka on July 20. They will play a practice match on July 23 or 24 before heading to the main series.

All the matches of the series will be played at R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo on July 26, 28 and 31 respectively.
