Two-day celebration at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy

On the occasion of celebrating the 77th birth anniversary of Abdullah Al-Mamun, a prominent personality of the modern drama movement of Bangladesh and a versatile artiste, a two-day programme titled ‘77th Birth Anniversary Celebration of Abdullah Al-Mamun’ will be held at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

Theatre, one of the most popular theatre troupes in the country, and BSA have jointly organised the event to remember the icon and his work.

Today, as a part of the celebration, Theatre will stage two consecutive shows (198th and 199th show) of its much-acclaimed play titled ‘Meraj Fakirer Maa’, written and directed by Abdullah Al-Mamun, at 5pm and 7:30pm at the BSA’s the National Theatre Hall.

On the other hand, tomorrow on the second day of the event, a seminar will be held at 4:30pm at the Seminar Hall of BSA, where noted theatre personality Mamunur Rashid will deliver Abdullah Al-Mamun Memorial Lecture on ‘Stage Production and Acting in Recent Days’. Following it, the 200th show of ‘Meraj Fakirer Maa’ will be staged at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall.

Besides, Ferdousi Majumdar, Ramendu Majumdar and Maruf Kabir, who have been appearing in all the shows of ‘Meraj Fakirer Maa’ since its journey on the stage, will be honoured at the event for their continuous appearance in all 200 shows of the play.

‘Meraj Fakirer Maa’ poses a few very important questions of life: What is more important--relationship or religion? Should a son leave his mother if his views regarding religion differ from that of hers? In fact, through this satirical play, the playwright tries to bring out the human values and depict certain characters, who oppress people in the name of religion.

Alongside Ramendu Majumdar, Ferdousi Majumdar and Maruf Kabir, the play also casts Tropa Majumdar, Mujibar Rahman Jewel, Tanjum Ara Palli, Saif Joardar, Abdul Kader and Tofa Hossain, among others.

Hasan Ahmed is the set designer, while Thandu Raihan is the lighting designer of the production. l
