The curtain will rise on the 23rd edition of ‘National Art Exhibition’ today at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

Organised by BSA, ‘National Art Exhibition’ is the biggest art exhibition in the country. BSA has been organising the Art Biennale since 1975 to bring together artists belonging to different age groups working in different mediums and techniques.

This year, the exhibition will feature 322 artworks by 310 promising artists of the country, among those 159 paintings, 45 sculptures, 50 printmaking works, 17 crafts, 8 potteries, 37 installations and video installations and seven performance arts will be put on display.

Jury board comprising artists Nasrin Begum, Mostafizul Haque, Sheikh Saadi Bhuiyan, Dr Mohammad Iqbal and Anisuzzaman have selected the 322 artworks from the works submitted by 850 artists.

Among the 310 artists, one will be bestowed with ‘Best Award’ worth Tk.2 lakh, while the four others will be awarded with the best sculpture, printmaking, new media and honourary award worth Tk.1 lakh. Besides, ‘Bengal Foundation Award’ worth Tk.1 lakh, ‘Dipa Haq Award’ worth Tk.20000 and ‘Kazi Anowar Hossain Award’ worth Tk.50000 will be handed over to the recipients at the award ceremony.

The award ceremony of 23rd National Art Exhibition will be held followed by an inaugural ceremony today at the National Art Gallery auditorium of BSA. Political Affairs Adviser to Prime Minister HT Imam will inaugurate the exhibition and also will hand over prizes to the winners. Presided over by BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky, former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid will be present as special guests at the inaugural ceremony.

For the first time, performance art has been included in the National Art Exhibition. Artists Jewel Chakma, SM Riad, Sumona Akter, Sujon Mahabub, Nazmul Hossain Nayan, Sourav Shaha will present their performance today, while Rubaiya Saom Deena will perform every day at 6pm on the gallery premise.

Today, Jewel Chakma will present his performance ‘Uttaran’ at 4pm, while SM Riad will perform ‘Attmar Punorjonmo’ at 4:25pm, Sumona Akter will perform ‘Prempotro’ at 4:45pm, Sujon Mahabub will perform ‘Toil Samachar’ at 6:15pm, Nazmul Hossain Nayan will perform ‘Manab Deho Pakhite Rupantar’ at 6:55pm and Sourav Shaha will perform ‘Humanity’ at 7:15pm.

Beginning from today, the exhibition will remain open to all every day from 11am to 8pm (3pm to 8pm on Fridays) until July 21. Besides, Rubaiya Saom Deena will present her performance art ‘Out of Mind’ every day at 6pm at National Art Plaza.

To disclose the detailed information on the 23rd edition of ‘National Art Exhibition, a press conference was held yesterday at the Seminar Hall of BSA, where BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky, Academy’s Fine Arts director Ashraful Alam Poplu and Director of BSA’s Drama and Film Department Badrul Alam Bhuiyan, among others, were present.
