Unemployment forces people to go abroad taking risk: BNP

BNP senior leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday said Bangladeshi youths are opting to take risky voyage to go abroad for lack of jobs in the country.

“Having failed to endure the pain of unemployment and repression, some Bangladeshi youths are now drifting of the coast of Tunisia,” he told a discussion.

The BNP leader further said, “Why several thousand people are fleeing Bangladesh by taking such a risky voyage and drowning? Can they answer to the question those who now talk about the development of the country?”

Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club demanding the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

According to media reports,  a rescue boat carrying around 75 migrants, 64 of them from Bangladesh, has been stuck off Tunisia for nearly two weeks after authorities refused to let them disembark.

At least 65 other migrants drowned last month as their boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the Tunisian coast after they had left Libya to reach Europe.

Khosru, a BNP standing committee member, said there is now no democracy, human rights, the rule of law, security of people, freedom of press and freedom of expression in Bangladesh. “That’s why people now don’t get justice in the country.”

He said a quarter is plundering public money and using the public resources for their own interests.

The BNP leader also said there is now no other alternative to waging a strong struggle to get rid of the current situation of the country. “We must now take to the street with a demand for the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and the restoration of democracy.”

He alleged that some sort of tension has been prevailing across the country as a quarter usurped power ignoring people. “Their main objective is to revive one-party rule and accumulate the public resources in their hands.”

About the proposed national budget for 2019-20, Khosru said people will get nothing from it and their hopes and aspirations will remain unfulfilled with it.

He said the current government is not accountable to people since it was not elected by them. “The country’s resources are not safe in the hands of those who captured power by rigging votes.”

The BNP leader also said the same quarter who governs the country is also doing business, politics, formulating policies and implementing those for protecting their interest.
