PRAN sued for importing cement instead of plastic resin

Custom House, Chattogram (CHC) yesterday filed a case against PRAN Beverage Limited, one of the leading companies in the sector and a sister concern of PRAN-RFL Group, for importing 30 containers cement through misdeclaration in place of plastic resin. CHC Joint Commissioner Shadhan Kumar Kunda said they have found evidence of misdeclaration during their examination against PRAN.

“A case has been filed under the custom act against PRAN as evidence of misdeclaration was found during physical examination by the authorities,” he said. A consignment of PRAN Beverage Limited reached the Chattogram Port on May 26 with the declaration of 510 metric tonnes (MT) of plastic resin worth US $5,66,000.

On June 6, the importer submitted documents to the authorities concerned for the release of the imported goods from the port. Before the release, the customs authorities conducted a physical examination and during that examination, the customs found that the containers were carrying cement instead of plastic resins.

Shadhan Kumar Kunda said the rate of import taxes for plastic resin was fixed at 32 per cent while the rate for cement was 91 per cent. “Apparently, it seems to us that the company tried to dodge a huge amount of revenue through misdeclaration,” said Kunda.

“If 32 per cent tax is counted, the total import tax for the containers will be 1.42 crore for plastic grains, while for cement at 91 per cent tax, the amount would be about Tk 4 crore,” added the CHC official.

We are also investigating whether the company is involved in money laundering through importing goods through misdeclaration, said Kunda.

Contacted, PRAN said they were not aware that the 30 containers were carrying cement instead of plastic resins.

“On June 1, we came to know that the containers were carrying cement. We informed the authorities concerned in written about the situation and requested for necessary actions. Payment for the shipment has not yet been made and PRAN-RFL Group thinks that it has fall victim to fraud,” said Ziaul Haque, Assistant General Manager, PRAN-RFL group.

He also claimed that media reports blaming PRAN of importing cement through misdeclaration were not factual.
