BIWTC to run special Eid services for 13 days

To cope with the rush of passengers, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) will run special ferry services for 13 days from Dhaka to Morelganj of Bagerhut, starting May 30.   Five vessels will be deployed and there will be no hike in fare for these services.

The Eid-ul-Fitr special service of the BIWTC, along with the regular services, will continue till June 11, said BIWTC deputy general manager (commercial/passenger) Sheikh Md Nasim. BIWTC sources said five BIWTC vessels would be used for carrying passengers from Dhaka to their destinations lying on the route, such as Chandpur, Barisal, Jhalakathi, Hularhut of Pirojpur and Morelganj of Bagerhut river ports under this special schedule.

The vessels to be pressed into service are PS (paddle steamer) Mahsud, Turn, Lepcha, MV (motorized vessels) Modhumoti and Bangli. According to the announced schedule, PS Turn and MV Modhumoti will leave Dhaka river port at 6:30pm and 7pm, respectively, on May 30 for Morelganj and Hularhut.

Under this schedule, the BIWTC paddle steamer MV Bangali will ply on May 31; June 3, 5, and 8 from Dhaka; June 4 from Morelganj; June 1 from Hularhut; and June 7 and 9 from Barishal. PS Lepcha will start on June 1, 3, 8 from Dhaka; June 2 from Morelganj; and June 4 and 10 from Barisal ends.

MV Modhumoti will leave on June 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 from Dhaka; May 31, June 2, 3, 5 from Hularhut; and June 8 and 11 from Barisal ends. PS Turn will sail on May 30, June 4, 7 from Dhaka and on June 1, 6, 9 from Barishal.

Under this schedule, the BIWTC paddle steamer PS Mahsud will sail on June 7 and 9 from Dhaka and June 8 and 10 from Barisal ends.

Syed Abul Kalam Azad, assistant general manager in charge of the BIWTC Barisal station, said BIWTC stations at Barisal and Narayanganj had been asked to provide special tug boats and piloting services. They have also been asked to be prepared for any emergency calls.

The passenger fare of BIWTC carriers would remain the same on these special trips as those of normal trips, the BIWTC official said.

Passengers travelling by BIWTC vessels on the 169 km Dhaka-Barishal route would have to pay a one-way fare of Tk.1,050 for a first-class cabin seat, Tk. 630 for a second-class cabin seat (equivalent of first class of private launches) and Tk.170 for a deck seat—all of which are about 30-50 per cent less than the fares charged by private water transport operators on this route, he added.

Sea trucks of the BIWTC will connect 11 stations of coastal routes under Barisal, Bhola, Laxmipur, Noakhali, and Chittagong districts including Maju Chowdhurir Hut, Manpura, Shashiganj, Ilisha, Charchenga, Boyarchar, Hatiya, Kumira and Guptachhara, according to BIWTC officials.

Two coastal ships, MV Monirul Huq and MV Baro-Awlia of the BIWTC, will operate passenger services from Chattogram to connect different destinations under Hatiya and Sandwip from May 30 to June 12. Waterbus services of the BIWTC will ply regularly from Sadarghat/Badamtali-Gabtal-Sadarghat and Narayanganj-Tongi-Narayanganj routes during the Eid vacation.

Additional ferry trips would also be run on the Paturia-Daulatdia, Mawa-Keorakandi, Chandpur - Shariatpur, Bhola-Lakshmipur and Laharhat-Veduria river routes for Eid-ul-Fitr, BIWTC sources added.
