As a part of the year-long programme to celebrate the eventful journey of 36 years, Mahakal Natya Sampraday staged two of its popular plays at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital. The 50th show of the play ‘Nilakhyan’ and 175th show of the play ‘Shikhandi Kotha’ were brought on the stage on Thursday and Friday respectively.

State minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid was present as the chief guest at the celebration on Thursday, while Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation secretary general Kamal Bayezid was present as special guest. Presided over by Mahakal chief Mir Zahid Hasan, dramatist Anan Zaman and director Yousuf Hasan Arko were recognised with honourary award at the event.

Following a discussion and award ceremony, the troupe staged the 50th show of ‘Nilakhyan’, a play based on the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s short story ‘Shapure’, on Thursday. Director Yousuf Hasan Arko uses the traditional narrative theatre technique to present the story of a snake-charmer. The play, which is the 36th production of the troupe, narrates the story of a snake-charmer whose dilemma over the desires for physical love and spiritual attainment takes the centre stage.

On the other hand, president of Sommilito Sangskritik Jote Golam Kuddus was present as chief guest on Friday, while presidium member of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation Lucky Inam was present as special guest. Dramatist Anan Zaman and director Dr Rashid Harun were honoured at the event.

The troupe staged the 175th show of ‘Shikhandi Katha’, written by Anan Zaman and directed by Rashid Harun, following a discussion and award ceremony. Aanan’s ethnographical work Shikhandi Katha focuses on the miserable plight of hermaphrodites as well as the ill treatment that they receive from society. He has presented a fragmented picture of the hermaphrodites’ den, their culture and lifestyle. In the soliloquy of a hermaphrodite, at the closing scene, the playwright is so emotional that his character delivers harsh words to the omnipotent God for their creation.
