‘Gunfight’ kills ‘drug trader’ in Cumilla

A suspected drug trader was killed in a 'gunfight' with police near Gumti River protection dam in Sadar upazila of Cumilla early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Jakir Hossain alias Kala Jakir, 35, son of Sultan Ahmed of Sashongaccha area in the upazila. He was wanted in seventeen cases, reports UNB.

Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive to arrest Kala Jakir around 2 am, said Mohammad Abu Salam Mia, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Jakir and his associates opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Jakir was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries.

Later, he was taken to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

One LG, two bullets and 1200 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
