BCL deprived faction ‘attacked again’

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders who were deprived of posts in the newly announced full-fledged committee alleged that they came under fresh attack from party general-secretary Golam Rabbani and his followers. Six female leaders were injured in the attack, along with 10 leaders.

Regarding this incident, the BCL's disgruntled fraction leaders have been holding a sit-in demonstration to demand a fair investigation and trial of the incident. Leaders at the demonstration said if Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not assure them about the trial, they would continue their hunger strike.

The incident of attack happened early on Sunday, around 2.30 am, inside the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).

However, the ‘claimed to be deserved more vital post’ as well as the deprived went on a hunger strike at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture amid rain fall.

Following the protest, Rabbani told the protesters that he would submit his resignation letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today (Sunday) in front of journalists.

Spokesperson of the deprived faction, Saif Babu, also a former publicity secretary of the body, said: “We, a 10-member delegation, went for a discussion with Chhatra League president and general secretary, after a discussion with the Awami League top-brass, regarding the instruction of Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to drop the controversial members from the committee of Chhatra League. We also went there to fix issues surrounding the Madhur Canteen incident where we were attacked first.”

“They (Shovon-Rabbani) are trying to save the 16 listed controversial members although the Awami League top-brass told us the list has come from Gana Bhaban. We were asking them about this matter,” former programme and planning affairs secretary Rakib Hossain said.

“Suddenly Rabbani charged BM Lipi Akter (deputy cultural affairs secretary in new committee, more vital post seeker) on why she gave speech against him at a media talkshow, and alleged him to be a drug addict as well. Lipi replied that she learnt it from him as he had said earlier against the former president Saifur Rahman Sohag,” Rakib added.

“Following this, Rabbani got furious, abused Lipi verbally, and slapped her. Some fellow activists of Rabbani also attacked other members of the visiting delegation,” Rakib and Babu alleged. The alleged attackers include drama and debate affairs secretary Jewel Molla, Sir AF Rahman Hall union general secretary Abdur Rahim (Rahim Sarker), Bangabandhu Hall union vice-president Akmol Hossain, Ziaur Rahman Hal unionl general secretary Hasibul Hossen Santo.

Those who face the attack include deputy cultural affairs secretary Nipo Islam Tonni, Tilottama Sikder, deputy publication secretary Farida Parvin, deputy student-scholarship secretary Srabony Shaila, former deputy international affairs secretary Emdad Hossain Sohag, former assistant secretary Azmir Sheikh, former deputy publicity secretary of DU unit Sheikh Abdullah, and general secretary of Shamsun Nahar hall unit Chhatra League Jesmin Shanta.

Around 3 am, Chhatra League president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani tried to calm down the protesters amid rain but they told both the leaders to go away. Facing the protest, Rabbani said: “I am sorry. I will submit the resignation letter tomorrow to the Prime Minister.”

About the incident, Shovon said: “There were some altercation. Nothing that can be described as an attack happened.”

Denying the allegations, Rabbani said: “This is nothing but the deprived leaders’ acting. No one was attacked. There were some heated discussions. They are doing this on instructions from a ‘special syndicate’.”

Later, at 7.30 am, Shovon and Rabbani sought time from the protesters until 8 pm to take action against the attackers.

On Wednesday, PM Sheikh Hasina—also the chief of the student front—ordered Chhatra League leaders to drop controversial leaders from its recently-announced full-fledged central committee. The organisation announced its 301-member full-fledged central committee on Monday, a year after its national council was held. Hours after the announcement, at least 50 leaders and activists who were deprived of seats or did not get their desired posts, organised a press briefing at Madhur Canteen in Dhaka University.
