Media plays vital role to build developed nation: Dr Hasan

Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said the role of media is indispensable to build a developed nation.

The minister termed mass media as one of the fourth pillars of the country and said it should practice objective journalism, which eventually will contribute to nation building activities.

He made the comment at a workshop titled “Ethics of Journalism, dissemination of objective news and apprising of right to Information Act” as the chief guest at Bangabandhu Hall of Chattogram Press Club in Chattogram, BSS reports.

Bangladesh Press Council in cooperation with Chattogram district administration organized the workshop for journalists of both print and electronic media.

The information minister said all online news portals will be brought under registration soon as organizations concerned have already submitted reports in this regard.

He urged journalists union and press club to extend their co-operation to bring the online news portals under registration.

Dr Hasan said Chattogram is the second largest city with the biggest seaport of the country and many eminent journalists were born in Chattogram who played an important role in the movements of restoration of democracy and liberation war.

The information minister laid emphasis on investigating reporting to project real scenario of the society.

Bangladesh Press Council Chairman Justice Mohammad Momtaz Uddin inaugurated the workshop as the special guests.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Kamal Hossain presided the workshop while Editor of the Bangladesh Protidin Nayeem Nizam and member of Bangladesh Press Council Manzurul Ahsan Bulbul, among others, addressed the inaugural function as special guests.

Justice Momtazuddin stressed the need for freedom of journalists alongside ensuring their dignity.

Monjurul Ashan Bulbul said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman formed Bangladesh Press Council in 1972.

Conducted by Bangladesh Press Council Secretary Shah Alam while Chattogram Press Club President Ali Abbas, General Secretary Chowdhury Farid, Vice President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Reaz Haider Chowdhury, General Secretary of Chattogram Union of Journalists Hasan Ferdous also spoke on the occasion.
