Akash DTH service starts Sunday

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Akash DTH service starts Sunday

Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite service provider ‘Akash’ is set to enter the market on Sunday with a total of 115 satellite television connections to cater to the need of the entertainment seekers. Beximco Communications Limited is going to launch Akash, which will be powered by the country’s pride project, Bangabandhu Satellite (BS)-1, said officials of the company yesterday. Beximco Communications Limited is a sister concern of Beximco Group.

Beximco Communications Limited officials confirmed there will be a total of 115 satellite television connections initially and out of these 20 will be of high definition (HD) quality. Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited (BCSCL), the operating organisation of BS-1, has already completed all necessary arrangements with the Beximco Communications Limited (BCL) for the DTH service.

BCSCL Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood yesterday said BS-1’s commercial service will also start from May 19 with ‘Akash’. Beximco Communications Limited has taken five  transponders of BS-1 dedicated for its DTH brand Akash for smooth and quality service, Mahmood added.

Officials said Beximco Communications Limited will launch the DTH brand Akash today at a ceremony in the capital and that is likely to be attended by, among others, information minister Hasan Mahmud, commerce minister Tipu Munshi, private industry and investment adviser to the prime minister and vice chairman of Beximco Group Salman F Rahman.

Beximco Communications Limited chairman Shayan F Rahman will also present. Beximco Communications Limited had earlier launched another DTH service under the brand name of “RealVU” with connectivity from foreign satellite companies.

After launching the RealVU service in different parts of Dhaka, Sylhet and Chattogram divisions in 2016, the company had to suspend their service on various causes later. Currently, there is no authorised DTH service in the country.

Beximco Communications Limited’s head of technology Anowarul Azim said Akash will meet the thirst of the country’s entertainment seekers with best quality services.

“Initially, we are going to offer 115 TV stations of which 20 will be HD quality,” he said revealing the service will be available from May 19.

Azim said initially they will offer their new service in all the districts of Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.  Azim, however, said people who have RealVU connections will get discounts and incentives for availing Akash services.

Sources said they will charge only Tk 399 for their initial standard package, and customers will have to have a dish from the company.
