BCL announces full central committee

7 hurt in ‘infighting over formation of body’
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
BCL announces full central committee

Almost a year after naming its president and general secretary, ruling Awami League’s affiliated student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday formed its full central committee. The committee consists of 301 members and a list detailing the names of the office bearers has been published on the organisation’s website. Sources said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the newly formed full committee. Meanwhile, at least seven people were injured during a clash allegedly between two opposing factions of BCL at Dhaka University yesterday, adds UNB.

The clashes took place after a group who were deprived of desired posts protested and rejected the newly-announced body. Witnesses said the clash came to a head when the deprived group held a press conference at Madhu's Canteen to announce their rejection after iftar.

While the press conference was in progress, supporters of BCL President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and General Secretary Golam Rabbani are alleged to have launched the attack disrupting the press conference as the two groups chased each other. The agitation left seven BCL members injured.  BCL's former Publication Secretary Sayed Babu, on the side of the deprived group, said "We are working for BCL at the grassroots level for long time but the newly formed committee failed to value us, so we are rejecting the new committee." The BCL held its council at Shurawardy Udyan on May 11, 2018.  Later, on July 31, 2018, Sheikh Hasina nominated Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon as president and Golam Rabbani as general secretary of the BCL central body.
