Any AL leader involved in Nusrat killing won’t be spared: Nasim

He urges BNP MPs-elect to join parliament
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Any AL leader involved in Nusrat killing won’t be spared: Nasim

Awami League presidium member and former health minister, Mohammad Nasim, has said that those involved in the killing of Feni madrasa student, Nusrat Jahan Rafi, will be given exemplary punishment, irrespective of their party affiliation, so that no one dares to commit such a heinous act in future. “I saw a news item in newspapers that a local AL leader has been patronising the killers of Nusrat. These people should not be in our party. They don’t believe in the ideology of the Awami League. They are criminals, they must be brought to justice,” he said.

Nasim, also the coordinator of the AL-led 14-party alliance, was speaking at a discussion on the historic Mujibnagar Day in the city’s Bangabandhu Avenue yesterday (Saturday).

"Law enforcers have already arrested most of the culprits and others will be caught soon. No one will be spared. No one will be allowed to go unpunished. They all have to get exemplary punishment so that no one dares to commit such a crime in future,” he said.

He said the killers of Nusrat will have to be tried under a special tribunal. People of the country will be happy if the government ensures speedy trial. People are watching the government's move. They want exemplary punishment, the senior AL leader added.

The former minister also criticised the BNP leaders for indulging in politics over Nusrat's killing, and urged them not to do so.

He alleged that the BNP government in the past was not sincere in holding the trial of the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders. But the AL government doesn’t spare even its party leaders and workers if they are involved in any criminal activities.

Nusrat, a student of the Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Sonagazi upazila of Feni, was set ablaze on April 6, allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against the principal of the madrasa, Sirajuddoula, for sexually harassing her last month.

Only a few minutes before the start of the Alim exam, four people allegedly took Nusrat to the rooftop of the three-storeyed administrative building of the madrasa, saying one of her friends was being assaulted there. They set her on fire at one stage of the argument over withdrawing the case.

After fighting for her life for five days, the girl died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday night. The senior AL leader also called upon the BNP leaders, elected in the national polls, to take oath and join Parliament.

“The BNP will lose the last chance if they do not come to Parliament by April 30. So, I urge those elected to join Parliament after discussing the issue with their party leaders. The second session of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) will begin on April 24,” he said.

Nasim said BNP leaders should join Parliament to criticise the mistakes of the government, instead of holding press conferences and telling lies over some baseless issues sitting in the party office.
