The Prime Minister’s adviser on private industries and investment, Salman F Rahman, has said that efforts were on to make Dohar and Nawabganj model upazilas. He also said he would gradually implement all his promises made to the people of the two upazilas. Rahman was speaking as chief guest at a programme organised on the occasion of Independence Day at the Joypara Government Pilot High School in Dohar upazila of Dhaka yesterday (Tuesday).

“We are relentlessly trying to implement Bangabandhu’s dream to make Bangladesh ‘Sonar Bangla’ under the astute leadership of Sheikh Hasina. I hope we can achieve this,” he said.

“Many quarters, including a certain political party of the country, tried several times to assassinate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, but failed eventually. They even tried to put up obstacles before Sheikh Hasina’s work

aimed at taking the country forward,” he added.

He said many countries are now recognising Bangladesh as a role model of development. If the ongoing developing work were to continue under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh would become a developed country by 2040.

“We have earned independence through the sacrifice of millions of people. It is a great achievement for the nation. We should know the history of our great Liberation War, and spirit of the Liberation War must be passed on from generation to generation. The country is moving ahead by upholding the history of independence,” he added.

At the beginning of the programme, Rahman received the salute from a march past by students of various schools of the upazila.

Some freedom fighters were given a reception by the Prime Minister’s adviser and eight families of freedom fighters who lost their lives in the Liberation War in 1971 were given Tk. 2,000 each.

Before the event, Rahman attended a programme at the Nawabganj Pilot High School and inspected a parade, comprising various teams of students of the upazila’s schools and colleges.

At the function, he remembered the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the martyrs who died in the Liberation War.

Students observed the day by organising various programmes related to the Liberation War.

Afroza Akhter Riba, upazila nirbahi officer of Dohar upazila, presided over the programme organised by the Dohar upazila administration, while Md Alamgir Hossain, chairman of the upazila, Md Sazzad Hossaain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dohar police station, advocate Abdul Mannan Khan, presidium member of the Bangladesh Awami League, and officials of different government bodies were present.

The nation celebrated its 49th Independence and National Day with a fresh vow to take Bangladesh towards prosperity with the spirit of the Liberation War.

On March 26, 1971, the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, declared Bangladesh’s independence following a crackdown on unarmed Bangalis on the midnight of March 25 by Pakistani occupation forces.
