‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ and ‘Tringsha Shatabdee’ on Shilpakala stage today

Marking the Independence Day, Theatre (Bailey Road) and Swapnadal--two of the popular theatre troupes in the country--are bringing their audience-admired productions titled ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ and ‘Tringsha Shatabdee’ respectively on the stages of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital today.

Both the plays will have two shows at two different venues. ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ will be staged at the Experimental Theatre Hall at 5pm and 7pm, while the anti-war production ‘Tringsha Shatabdee’ will be staged at the Studio Theatre Hall at the same times.

Directed by late theatre personality Abdullah Al Mamun, ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ is one of the masterpieces by prolific writer Syed Shamsul Haq. Based on a story of a village, ‘Payer Awaj Pawa Jay’ zooms in on the brutal genocide and rape by the Pakistani occupation forces during the Liberation War in 1971. The play also focuses on the ignorance, superstitions and misuse of religion that prevailed in the rural society. Apart from sketching the victory of Bangladesh, the play also urges the need to be free from superstition, domination and discrimination to build a secular society.

The probable cast of the play includes Ferdousi Majumdar, Keramat Maola, Paresh Acharya, Tropa Majumdar, Khurshid Alam, Maruf Kabir, Tofa Hossain and Atikur Rahman in lead roles.

On the other hand, adapted and directed by Zahid Repon, Swapnadal’s ‘Tringsha Shatabdee’ is an anti-war Laboratory Theatre production mainly based on the atom-bomb tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War. But the terrible wars of the world history, including Bosnia, Afghanistan-Iraq war, recent brutal attack in Gaza-Syria-kwait-Tunisia-Yamen-Myanmar etc. and the liberation war of Bangladesh are also the important issues of the production. Swapnadal premiered this production in 2002.
