Holders Abahani Limited bounced back in winning ways when they thumped its arch-rival Mohammedan Sporting Club by six wickets in the fairly-contested sixth-round game of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur yesterday.

Sent to bat, Mohammedan Sporting Club managed to put on 248 for seven in 50 overs, after which Abahani Limited run down the modest target with six wickets in hand and 15 balls to be spare.

Star-studded Abahani Limited kicked off their chasing in emphatic manner as they put up 105 through their opening wicket of Jahurul Islam Omi and Soumya Sarkar before Soumya’s departure for 43 having bowled by fast-bowler Shahadat Hossain Rajib.

Together Wasim Jaffer and Nazmul Islam Shanto, wicketkeeper-batsman Omi cobbled together a couple of successful partnerships on way to his 96.

The national discard experienced batsman shared an outstanding 69 with Wasim for the second-wicket and another 36 with Shanto for the third-wicket stand that surpassed 200-run mark.

Just four runs later of Shanto’s unfortunate leg before, pacer Rajib picked up his brace to clean bowl Jahurul when he looked to whop him for big shot with a view to complete his hundred. Unlucky Jahurul fell four runs short of his century. He smacked a patient 96 from 131 deliveries that featured with a full dozen boundaries.

Man of the match Omi said afterwards that he did not regret for his hundred because the team’s success is the big matter to him. He is happy to contribute to the team’s cause.

Captain Mosaddek Hossain Saikat scored the required runs with Sabbir Rahman Rumman, who finished the chase in emphatic fashion with a six off part-time off spinner Abdul Mazid, the shot that went over the long on.

Saikat clobbered a six and as many four in his unbeaten 23-ball 18. Rumman on the other hand cracked an indefatigable 21 from 19 balls, laced with three fours and a six.

Shahadat Hossain Rajib was the most successful bowler who claimed a brace for Mohammedan, who conceded their third defeat on the trot.

Earlier, Mohammedan Sporting Club mislaid opener Liton Kumar Das inside 13 overs after being put in to bat on Mirpur surface. Wicketkeeper-batsman Irfan Sukkur attempted to build up big partnership to enlarge the total. He shared 43 with Abdul Mazid for the second wicket and another 68 with Rokibul Hasan for the third wicket before his dismissal for 57. He top-scored for Mohammedan with 57 off 78 balls that featured with four boundaries.

Rokibul, the veteran stroke-maker who made victorious Mohammedan earlier two matches single-handedly, this time tried to build up a staggering total and brought them back in winning ways. Before his dismissal having caught behind, the right-handed batsman brought up his half century after Irfan Sukkur and Chaturanga de Silva made 23 for the fifth-wicket before stroking 17 for the fourth-wicket with Nadif Chowdhury, who was out for seven. He clubbed five fours in his 54-ball 51.

Finally, de Silva and Sohag Gazi’s late fire that set a modest target of 249 for Abahani. Chaturanga struck 32 off 24 balls, while Gazi lashed 27 off 20 balls.

Fast bowler Mohammad Saifuddin, who came to play for table-toppers after being missed a round game for his injury, returned with the figures of 3 for 31. Left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam Opu also grabbed three wickets for them.
