‘Je Chhilo Drishtir Simanay’
singer goes out of sight forever

Does Shahnaz Rahmatullah really need any introduction? Just go through these lines—’Ekbar jete de na amar chhotto sonar gaye’, ‘Ek nodi rokto periye, ‘Je chhilo drishtir shimanay’, ‘Ek tara tui desher kotha’, ‘Amar desher matir gondhe’ and ‘Sagorer teer theke’. The list could be made bigger with many more popular songs like these, but let’s stop here. The legendary Shahnaz Rahmatullah is the singer of all these ageless songs.

Four of Shahnaz Rahmatullah’s popular songs entered the list of the 20 greatest Bangla songs of all times, when BBC conducted a survey in 2006.

Veteran singer Shahnaz Rahmatullah breathed her last on Saturday night at her Baridhara residence in the capital. She was 65.

Like many other great personalities around the world, Shahnaz Rahmatullah’s outstanding works will immortalise her. As long as patriotic songs are heard in Bangladesh, the name of Shahnaz Rahmatullah will be remembered for generations.

Born on January 2, 1952, to M Fazluq Haq and Asia Haq, Shahnaz Rahmatullah started taking music lessons in her childhood. Having earned an identity as a child artiste, she lent her vocal to a playback song for the first time at the age of 11. This was for the film ‘Notun Sur’ in 1963. Then she started singing for television in 1964. She continued singing till 1985. She sang Urdu geets and ghazals as well. She took lessons in ghazal singing from eminent ghazal singer Mehdi Hasan.

She lent her vocals to a number of notable films. She did playback for great films like ‘Abar Tora Manush Ho’ (tuned by Khan Ataur Rahman), ‘Sakhkhi’ (tuned by Alauddin Ali) and ‘Chhutir Faande’ (tuned by Anwar Parvez). Among these films, she bagged her National Film Award with the song ‘Sagorer saikat ke jeno dur theke’ for the film ‘Chhutir Faande’.

Shahnaz Rahmatullah sang many timeless songs in her career. Some of her heart-warming patriotic songs are: ‘Phuler kane bhramar ese’ (‘Pitch Dhala Poth’), ‘Oi jhinuk fota sagor belay’, ‘Pari na bhule jete’ (Sakhkhi), ‘Jebhabe bachi becheto achchi’, ‘Ami saat sagorer opar hote’ (‘Koto Je Minoti’), ‘Shonen shonen jahapona’ (‘Shaat Bhai Champa’), ‘Ke jeno sonar kathi chhoyay prane’, ‘Ami je kebol bole tumi’ (‘Aguntok’), ‘Ektu shomoy dile na hoy’ (‘Shurjo Othar Aage’), ‘Swapner cheye sundor kichhu nei’, ‘Abar kokhon kobe hobe dekha’, ‘Jodi chokher drishti diye chokh badha jay’, ‘Tomar agune porano e duti chokh’, ‘Tumi ki sei tumi’, ‘O jar chokh nai’ (‘Taasher Ghar’), ‘Ghum ghum ghum chokhe’ (Ghuddi), ‘Ami to amar galpo bolechi’, ‘Bondhure tor mon pailam na’, ‘Amay tumi dak dile ke’, ‘Oi akash ghire sondhya name’, ‘Amar chhotto bhaiti mayay bhora mukhti’, ‘Ashar shrabon ele nei to shonhshoy’, ‘Baroti bochhor pore’, ‘Aro kichhu dao na dukhkho amay’, ‘Ami oi mone mon diyechi jokhon’, ‘Amar sajano baganer anginay’, ‘Digantajora math’, ‘Tomar alor brinte’ and ‘Ei jiboner monche mora’, among others.

Alongside the prestigious Ekushey Padak and the National Film Award, Shahnaz Rahmatullah received the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award, BACHSAS Award and many other honours for her enormous contributions to the country’s field of music.
