A police constable and a man sustained bullet injuries as miscreants attacked and opened fire at a polling station in Chandnaish upazila on Sunday morning.

The injured Constable Farhad Hossain, 31, of Chandnaish Police Station, was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Another bullet injured could not be identified immediately.

Keshab Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Chandnaish Police Station, said that a gang of miscreants swooped on the polling station at Purba Chandnaish Government Primary School for rigging.

Locals said that within one hour of voting begins, the supporters of Awami League candidate K M Nazim Uddin entered the polling booths and tried to take control of the polling station.

As presiding officer Abdul Matin tried to obstruct them, they swooped on him.

Later, the clash ensued as the on-duty policemen came to rescue the presiding officer. Several gunshots were heard during the clash that left the cop and the unidentified man bullet injured, according to witnesses.

Besides, five people were also injured as police charged batons to bring the situation under control.

Police also arrested three people from the spot, said the OC.

Meanwhile, following the incident, the election commission has suspended voting in the centre.unb
