Amid the outcry over the death of a private university student in the capital, another university student was crushed to death by a bus after its helper reportedly pushed him off the vehicle at Sherpur in Sadar upazila of Moulvibazar district yesterday evening. At least four people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in Joypurhat, Munshiganj and Gazipur districts on Saturday.

Two more students and five others were also killed and five injured in separate road accidents in Munshiganj, Gazipur, Tangail and Nilphamari districts yesterday.

Elsewhere, students in Barishal and Jashore’s Benapole blocked roads in respective areas yesterday demanding maximum punishments for drivers involved in accidents that claimed the lives of a college student and six others, and immobilised a schoolgirl on Friday.  

The Moulvibazar victim was identified as Wasim Afnan, a 4th-year student of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering department of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) and son of M Abu Zahed Mahbub and Dr Mina Parvin of Rudra village

in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj, adds UNB.

Witnesses and victim's friends said, 11 students of the university boarded a Sylhet-bound bus of 'Udar Paribahan' coming from Mymensingh at the Toll Plaza in Habiganj after attending a wedding ceremony. They decided to get down from the bus at Sherpur. Then, a brawl broke out with the bus helper over fare which was later settled, said SAU student Shiplu Roy.

As Wasim was the last man to come down of the bus, its helper pushed him out of the vehicle and the driver soon sped away. Under the impact of the push, Wasim went beneath the wheels and was eventually run over by the bus, he said.

Wounded critically, Wasim was sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said SI Faruque Ahmed of the hospital police camp.

SI Quamrul Islam of Sherpur Highway Police said the accident occured as the helper shut the bus door before the student got down from it.

Police seized the bus from Begumganj of Osmaningar upazila of Sylhet but its helper and driver managed to flee, he said.

In Munshiganj, a 6th-grader boy died after he was run over by a bus on Dhaka-Mawa Highway in Medinimandal area of Lauhajang upazila.

The deceased was identified as Antar, 12, son of Md Raza Miah of the same area. He was a student of Mediniganj Anwar Ali High School.

A speeding bus hit him while giving space to another vehicle, killing Antar on the spot, said Golam Morshed Talukder, in-charge of Hashara Highway Police Outpost. Students of the school and locals put barricades on the road, interrupting vehicle movement for about 2 and a half hours.

In Gazipur, a motorcyclist was killed and two pillion riders were injured in an accident involving 3 vehicles on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Salna area in the city.

The deceased was identified as Jumman Hossain, a college student and son of Zahangir Alam, hailing from Baopara area in the city.

In Barishal, students of Government BM College protested demanding maximum penalty for the bus driver involved in Friday's road accident in Barishal which left seven people dead. One of the victims was an MA student of the college.

Agitated students blocked the Dhaka-Barishal Highway for about two hours, halting traffic on the busy road. They brought out a procession from the campus before putting up barricades on the highway at Notullabad around 10am.

The students called off their protests after Barishal City Mayor Sher Niabat Sadik Abdulla assured them that justice will be done.

Our Staff Reporter from Barishal adds: Bus driver Abdul Jalil, who was driving the bus that killed 7 in Barishal on Friday, was sent to jail after police produced him before the court of Barishal metropolitan magistrate yesterday.

He was arrested from his house in Chandpasa area of Barishal metropolitan area on Friday night. Police filed a murder case against the driver.

Seven people, including Shila Haldar, 24, an MA student, were killed after a bus of 'Durjoy Paribahan' hit a human hauler in city's Tetultala area on Friday morning.

In Jashore, students blocked Benapole-Jashore highway yesterday morning demanding compensation for schoolgirl Nipa who lost her right leg in Thursday's road accident in Sharsha upazila.

The school students put up barricade on the highway around 9am boycotting their classes and they also burned tyres.

In Tangail, 2 youths were killed when their motorcycle crashed into a roadside palm tree at Taltola in Basail upazila last night. The deceased were identified as Shawon Khan, and Jamil.

In Nilphamari, a teenage female worker was killed when a bus hit an auto-rickshaw at Shimultoli village in Sadar upazila of Nilphamari last night. The deceased was identified as Babita Rani Dutta, 16, a worker of a factory in Uttara Export Processing Zone.
