Prime Bank Cricket Club smashed Abahani Limited’s four-match winning streak when the Bankers powered past the holders by 16 runs in the high-scoring encounter of the fifth-round game in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the Khan Sheheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah yesterday.

Abahani Limited lost their opener Jahurul Islam Omi in the initial second over to overhaul the challenging target of 303. Therefore, Abhani’s Indian recruit Wasim Jaffer attempted to handle Prime Bank’s bowlers with Soumya Sarkar Nazmul Hossain Shanto.

En route to his 94, Jaffer pulled together 62 for the second wicket with Soumya, who fell for 36 and an blistering 132 with Shanto for the third-wicket.

Jaffer fell six runs short of his hundred. The 41-year-old batsman played 91 balls where he clubbed nine boundaries and a six at his 119-minute stay at wickets.

With the fall of Jaffer, Abahani mislaid another two wickets-Mohammad Mithun and Shanto in the space of 20 runs while the holders were stuttering at 219 for five. Shanto cracked 73 off 82, hitting four boundaries and a six.

Then when captain Mosaddek Hossain Saikat and Sabbir Rahman Rumman were at crease, Abahani’s hopes of winning the match were alive. The duo hit 37 before the exit of Rumman, who holed out for 10.

Saikat tried to shore the unsteady ship with the help of the fellow batsmen but he did not get ably support from the other end as wickets were falling at regular intervals. He was the last batsman out for 52 that was not enough to save the match.

Finally, Dhanmondi-based club managed to score 286 on the board with seven balls to spare. Nahidul Islam, Abdur Razzak and Al Amin snapped up three wickets each for the Bankers.

Earlier, Prime Bank Cricket Club rode on Anamul Haque Bijoy’s spell-binding 102 piled on 302 for five in their stipulated 50 overs.

By clubbing hundred, Bijoy implanted his name beside Mohammad Ashraful, who clattered three successive centuries in the last year’s Dhaka Premier League to make the feat as the first cricketer in Bangladesh cricket history.

The wicketkeeper-batsman earlier clouted an innings of 101 against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club after an unbeaten 100 against Legends of Rugpanj on March 14.

Bijoy notched his first fifty from 61 balls with the help of five boundaries and a six, from where he stretched his innings with on single and double to reach at third hundred on the trot but he completed his hundred with a towering six what he struck off Sunzamul Islam.

After reaching triple digit, Bijoy did not last so long as left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam Opu trapped him leg before when he was on 102.

Abhimanyu Easwaran missed his century for 15. He clattered four boundaries and two sixes in his 96-ball knock. Arfiul Haque’s rapid-fire of 52 off 27 balls, laced with seven boundaries to be remained unbeaten with Alok Kapali scoring 15.

Bijoy was named for the player of the match award for his jaw-dropping batting display.
