With a renewed call for boosting the local software market with new generation apps and software service, the three-day ‘BASIS Softexpo 2019’ was kicked off yesterday at International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital.

Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) organised the expo in partnership with ICT Division of the government. The expo will be held from March 19-21.

Inaugurating the expo as the chief guest, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak said Bangladesh now stands on a cross-road of becoming an IT exporter from an importer.

“The fourth industrial revolution is looming. The private sector now needs to cooperate with the government for finding out a solution to meet the possible challenges as well as utilize the prospects of the looming revolution,” he said.

Palak said the previous first, second and third industrial revolutions created a lot of opportunities and generated employment although there was apprehension of huge job loss.

“The fourth industrial revolution can be boon for us if we utilize the prospects and opportunities because of the emergence of new technologies,” he said.

About the prospect of IT, Palak said that more than ten lakh jobs have been created in the sector. “The industry will add another three lakh jobs in the market within next couple of years,” he said.

The State Minsiter said their government is heavily investing on the digitization process to make the citizen service easier and generate job employment in the coming days.

ICT is the government’s top priority sector and government is providing training and ensuring facilities to flourish the digitization process, he added.  

Palak said the educational institutions including universities have to take step to change their curriculum to develop skills on emerging technologies.

“The government has already taken initiative to set up Sheikh Hasina Institute for Frontier Technology (SHIFT) on 70 acres of land in Shariatpur to create skill manpower on new and emerging technologies,” he said.

The government has also taken a project titled: ‘Establishing Digital Connectivity (EDC)’ to reach internet facilitates in each village within the next five years, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, President of BASIS Syed Almas Kabir said, “We used to export software packages to only 30 countries a few years back. But we now export such packages to 70 countries. This flourishing industry has provided thousands of unemployed youths with the opportunity to work both at home and abroad. ”

Executive Director of Bangladesh Computer Council Parthapratim Deb, President of BASIS Syed Almas Kabir and Senior Vice President Farhana A Rahman, among others, addressed the function.

More than 250 national and international IT companies are showcasing their products and services in this mega exhibition of Bangladesh. More than 100 local and international experts will address 30 seminars on various contemporary IT related issues.
