Two-day int’l music festival begins at JnU today

A two-day international music festival titled ‘Tritiyo Sangeet Utsab 2019’ (Third Music Festival 2019) will begin today on the premises of Jagannath University (JnU) in the capital.

Organised by Music Department of JnU and patronised by Diamond World, the festival is scheduled to take place every day from 11am to 10pm, the festival convener and initiator Anima Roy, also the chairman of the Music Department of JnU, informed.

JnU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Mizanur Rahman will inaugurate the festival while State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid will attend the closing ceremony as the chief guest tomorrow.

In this year’s edition, the audiences can enjoy almost every type of musical performances, a music festival can offer.

Today, on the opening day, 42 students of JnU’s Music Department will stage one of the acclaimed dance-dramas titled ‘Chitrangada’, written by Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore, in the evening. Directed by Anima Roy, the dance of the play has been choreographed by Warda Rihab. The script of the play is an adaptation of a tale in the great eastern epic ‘Mahabharata’, but with new and modern interpretations permanent for mankind.

Anima Roy said about staging the play, “So far as I know, Jagannath University is the first university to bring ‘Chitrangada’ on stage. We took the students of our department at many places where Rabindranath Tagore lived, so that they could relate and nurture their love and emotion for the poet. With the drama, they could feel the love for Tagore by participating. I am hopeful about them.”

“Also, I would like to thank all the people associated with the music festival for making it a success. I am grateful to them”, she added.

Prominent singers like Subir Nandi, Rathindranath Roy, Khairul Anam Shakil, Kiran Chandra Roy, Ferdous Ara, Tapan Chowdhury, Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya, Aditi Mohsin, Laisa Ahmed Lisa, Swagata Mukherjee and Rajrupa Chowdhury, among others, will perform at the festival.

Besides, an award giving ceremony followed by a reading out essay session by Dr Asit Roy will take place at 12:30pm on the concluding day.

Began in 2017, the annual music festival did not take place last year. This year’s music festival will be grander than the earlier editions.
