FIFA council member Kiron gets bail

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
FIFA council member Kiron gets bail

A Dhaka court yesterday granted bail to Bangladesh Football Federation’s women wing chairman Mahfuza Akter Kiron in a defamation case filed over her alleged derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sabbir Yasir Ahmed Chowdhury granted the bail till April 2 on a Tk 10,000 bond. Earlier on March 16, Kiron was sent to jail following the rejection of her bail petition by another Dhaka court. Motijheel police arrested Kiron, also a FIFA council member, from her Dhanmoni residence in the capital on Saturday after sports organiser Abu Hasan Chowdhury Prince filed a defamation case against her on March 12. Prince, a permanent member of Mohammedan Sporting Club and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club as well as vice-president of Badda Jagoroni Club, lodged the case with the CMM Court against Kiron for making ‘derogatory remarks against the prime minister.’ On Monday, international rights body Amnesty International censured Kiron;s arrest saying Bangladeshi authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Kiron, “who faces two years behind bars simply for exercising her right to freedom of expression.”
