Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Tuesday said criminals involved in the gun attack on election officials and law enforcers in Rangamati will be brought to book.

He called Monday’s Baghaichhari attack “tragic”, saying, “It was planned.”

Seven people, including an assistant presiding officer, were killed and 13 others injured in the gun attack on a motorcade of election officials and law enforcers after the second phase of upazila election.

CEC Huda insisted that there was no negligence on the part of law enforcers.

“Those involved in the incident will be identified soon,” he told reporters at Chattogram Circuit House after visiting the injured at Combined Military Hospital in the district.

He also promised to provide financial assistance to the victims.

Huda, however, insisted that the upazila polls were free and fair.

Meanwhile, Rangamati Deputy Commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid said a joint drive will be conducted to arrest the attackers.

Alamgir Kabir, the district’s police chief, who accompanied the DC, said security will be beefed up to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

The local administration provided Tk 20,000 to each family of those killed in the attack. Seven of the injured, being treated at Baghaichhari Health Complex, have been given Tk 10,000 each.UNB.
