200th show ‘Lal Jomin’ today

‘Lal Jomin’, a mono-drama performed by talented actress Momena Chowdhury, is set to stage 200th show today. The landmark show will be staged only for the invited guests at the BATC Auditorium in the capital under the initiative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Scripted by noted theatre personality Mannan Hira and directed by Supid Chakroborty, the play ‘Lal Jamin’ depicts the story of a girl barely fourteen. The girl wanders around her village falling in love with the beauty of it all, quite oblivious to the world outside that boundary of the hazel pond that confines her love, the blood-red water lilies.  Her illusion of the beautiful world shatters when one night she hears the whispered conversation between her parents - whispers of war, destruction, pain and blood.

Freedom – this one-word sticks to the naive young girl’s conscience.  In the meantime, she falls in love with a shadow of a young and strong man. But she falls into the dilemma whether to respond to her true feelings.  Her father leaves her to be a freedom fighter without her consent, but her age doesn’t allow her to fight, to be a freedom fighter.  But she sets sails with bravery in the heart following that shadow-man as her true commander.

Bangladesh’s one of the foremost playwrights Mannan Hira has mingled the literary and local dictions in writing the play. Momena Choudhury, who also has reputation on stage, performed in the play keeping herself attached to its spirit.

‘Lal Jomin’ was brought to the stage for the first time on May 19 in 2011 at Natmandal of Dhaka University. Over the last seven and a half years, the play has already competed 199 shows at home and abroad. Momena Chowdhury earned huge admiration for noteworthy performance in the play.

Momena was an employee in Biman Bangladesh Airlines for long 25 years. To celebrate the milestone success of the play, the organisation has taken initiative to stage the 200th show of the play today.

Momena said about completing the 200th show of her mono-drama, its success and dream, “I am grateful to all my family members for their sacrifice in this long journey. Without their unconditional support, it was not possible for me to bring ‘Lal Jomin’ at this stage. A huge number of audiences have already watched the play at home and abroad.”

“As ‘Lal Jomin’ tells the story of our glorious Liberation War, so I have a dream of performing in front of our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. I hope that my long-awaited dream will come true one day. Because our Prime Minister is a cultural-minded person. I believe she may be interested to watch this Liberation War-based play, if she comes to know about it,” Momena added while expressing her desire to present her play ‘Lal Jomin’ to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The actress has also expressed her gratitude to noted playwright Mannan Hira and young director Sudip Chakroborty for their brilliant contribution to the play.
