Mystery shrouds death of BSMMU doctor

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Mystery shrouds death of BSMMU doctor
Dr Rajan Karmaker

The death of a doctor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University (BSMMU) yesterday triggered a controversy with his family claiming that it was unnatural and demanded an autopsy. The deceased, Dr Rajan Karmaker, was an associate professor of the dental department of BSMMU and the son-in-law of food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder. Rajan died at Square Hospital in Dhaka yesterday.

According to his family, Rajan had returned to his house on Indira Road in Farmgate area after finishing his private practice at a hospital around midnight on Saturday. He lived in the house with his wife, Krishna Majumder, who is also a doctor of BSMMU. At 3 am, Krishna called Rajan’s mother and said her son was dying.

Later, the family members came to know that Rajan was shifted to Square Hospital and the duty doctor had declared him dead.

A spokesman of Square Hospital said Rajan was brought dead to the emergency department at 3.45 am. “We later informed the matter to his family,” he added.

Rajan’s uncle, Sujon Karmake,r told the media that they wanted a proper investigation into his death and also the reason behind it through an autopsy.

Sujon informed that they were following the rules for an autopsy and would file a

case later. “Rajan’s mother also wants to ensure that the cause of his death is properly investigated,” he added. Jane Alam, officer in-charge (OC) of Sher e Bangla Nagar police station, said that nobody has lodged a complaint as yet. “However, we’re aware of the matter and a team is in the hospital. If the deceased’s family wants to lodge a complaint, we will certainly take it into cognisance,” he added.

Dr Omar Farukh, a colleague of the deceased, said Rajan had no physical complaints. “We know that he had a family dispute. We want his autopsy and cause of death,” he said.

Dr Kazi Billur Rahman, chairman of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) of BSMMU, told the media: “I have talked to the minister and he has no objection about the autopsy. Rajan’s body will be taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for this purpose. All the students and doctors here want a proper investigation into his death.”

His family said Rajan had passed out from Chattagram Medical College. He hailed from Begumganj in Noakhali district.
