It was in the early 90s when evergreen singer Kumar Bishwajit released a solo album titled ‘Dirghoshas’, with the songs ‘Pagol Bolo’, ‘Ananda Ashram’, ‘Kono Kono Raat’ and ‘Ek Tara Bajaiyo Na’ getting huge popularity. Over the course of time, ‘Ek Tara’ gained a cult status as it blended in with the Bengali emotion and culture.

When the album was released, it was mentioned that the song ‘Ek Tara’ was a collected number. But Kumar Bishwajit rarely sang any collected song. So, he started looking for the lyricist and composer of the song. Finally, the music composer of ‘Ek Tara’, Kishore Chatterjee, was found after many years of hard labour and serious effort by singer Samarjit.

So how was the composer of ‘Ek Tara’ tracked down? Samarjit knew Adhir Das, a resident of Kolkata. And it turned out that Adhir Das knew Kishore Chatterjee, who lives at Naihati near Kolkata.

Adhir Das knew that Kumar Bishwajit was trying to meet the composer of ‘Ek Tara’ for a long time. With destiny favouring a linkup between the singer and the composer, Kishore Chatterjee came to Dhaka at the invitation of Kumar Bishwajit to give him the intellectual right of the song.

This is how, with the help of Samarjit, Kumar Bishwajit finally met the ‘Ek Tara’ composer on Friday evening at his Dhaka residence.

“I had been trying to find out the lyricist and the composer of the song for a long time because they deserve to have the credit for the song and it’s their right too. It is very rare that a music composer could be found this way after a very long time. I am really grateful to Kishore Da (Chatterjee) for coming to Dhaka and giving me his time,” Kumar Bishwajit said.

“Now, I will make it official according to the copyright law. The song has already been released on many local online sites. I request them to suspend the song from their sites by owning up responsibly,” he added.

On his part, Kishore Chatterjee said, “When the song gained huge popularity in Bangladesh and even across the world after Kumar Da (Bishwajit) rendered it, I had tried to contact him. But I had no way to do so. Finally, I have met him. And, ‘Ek Tara’ has also got its due fulfilment.”

The lyricist of the song is Laxmi Kanto Roy. A child artiste had sung the song once on India’s Doordarshan in the early 80s after Kishore Chatterjee composed the music.
