Withdraw ‘Bangladesh Bank History’ from market: HC

The High Court yesterday summoned Shuvankar Saha, editor of ‘Bangladesh Bank History’ to appear before it on March 12 to explain his position over the distortion of the Liberation War history in the book ‘History of Bangladesh Bank’ published by the Bangladesh Bank in December 2017.

The HC also directed the authorities concerned to withdraw the book of ‘Bangladesh Bank History’ from the market. The HC bench comprising Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali came up with the orders after receiving a report submitted by the probe body, which was formed in line with the HC order to find out the people responsible for distorting history of the book.

The probe body formed following the directive of the High Court has found evidence of distortion of the Liberation War history in the book.

In the report, the probe panel said that the history of the Liberation War has been distorted by not attaching the picture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the book.

Earlier on October 2 last year, the High Court asked the Finance Division Secretary to investigate the absence of Bangabandhu’s photo and distortion of the Liberation War history in the book ‘History of Bangladesh Bank’ and submit a report to his end.

The HC passed the order following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Human

Rights Commission Chairman Iktedar Ahmed.

The court also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the distortion of the Liberation War history and the absence of the photo of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the book should not be declared illegal.

Bangladesh Bank published a book ‘History of Bangladesh Bank’ in December 2017 in which there is no existence of the photo of Bangabandhu and it also reportedly distorted the history of the Liberation War, including the ‘7th March Speech’.

Barrister ABM Altaf Hossain appeared for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Al Amin Sarker represented the state and Jobaer Rahman Sarker moved on behalf of the Bangladesh Bank during the hearing on the petition.
