40 years celebration of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro held

Seeking a better society of enlightened people, Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, one of the leading organisations of the country promoting literature among the people, celebrated its 40th anniversary on Friday.

The day was commemorated with a colourful rally starting from in front of Bangladesh National Museum and ending at the Bishwo Shahitto Kendro Building in the city's Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue.

A day-long festival was held at Bishwo Shahitto Kendro where invitees and members across the country gathered to observe the anniversary.

Abdullah Abu Sayeed, the man behind Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, hoped of leaving a better future for the youth, saying, "In times, darkness will attack us. We will fight and indeed we will be victorious.”

Noted writer and academician Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal stressed the work Bishwo Sahitto Kendro has been doing for the past 40 years.

"Any youth who comes in touch with this organisation is bound to change. Dr Sayeed knew long ago the significance of promoting book reading among the youth," he added.

Artist Mustafa Monowar praised Sayeed's efforts saying he is the example of how far a man can reach with good will and for a noble cause.

Starting in 1978 with the slogan 'need enlightened people', Bishwo Shahitto Kendro has grown into a unique platform for book lovers and progressive thinkers; branching out across the country for nurturing society.

Its founder won Ekushey Padak and other international accolades for his works to encourage people to read.

The organisation members celebrated the day through discussions, cultural performances and more at Bishwo Shahitto Kendro.UNB
