BTRC blocks 244 porn sites

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
BTRC blocks 244 porn sites

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has ordered the shutdown of 244 pornography websites. The BTRC yesterday (Wednesday) instructed the International Internet Gateway (IIG) and it has started shutting down the porn sites.

Earlier in the day, Mustafa Jabbar, telecommunications and information technology minister, posted a status on his Facebook page: “244 porn sites have been blocked. Drive is continuing and it will continue”.

The ICT boss said YouTube is one of the biggest sources of porn. They have spoken to the authorities who agreed to remove some of the contents.

On November 19 last year, the High Court (HC) directed the government to block all pornography websites and publication of all obscene material from the electronic form for the next six months.

Secretaries of the post and telecommunication ministry and the law ministry, chairman of the BTRC and the authorities of five telecom bodies have been asked to reply to the rule within four weeks. The Law and Life Foundation recently filed a writ petition before the HC, seeking necessary order in the matter.

Bangladesh has more than 60 million Internet users and majority of them access the Internet on their mobile phones, according to the BTRC.

There is no official data on how many visit porn sites.

However, a survey conducted by Manusher Jonno Foundation said 77 per cent of schoolgoers in Dhaka visit porn sites on a regular basis.
