Focus on development, fight against graft

After coming to power for the fourth time, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to again meet bureaucrats from this month onwards to revamp the civil administration with the aim of expediting various development projects. She will also urge the civil officials to stop corruption so as to make Bangladesh a corruption-free country. As part of the Premier’s further initiative, she will begin by first meeting officials of the public administration ministry tomorrow (Thursday), said sources in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Cabinet Division. The Premier will gradually visit some ministries, including the local government and rural development (LGRD) ministry and the home ministry, this month and early next month, in order to speed up the civil administration for implementing the mega projects on time, the sources added.

The Prime Minister will gradually meet all the officials of all the ministries and divisions for the same purpose, according to the sources. After disclosing the scheduled visit of the PM, the officials of the ministries concerned—especially those of local government, rural development and co-operatives, public administration and home affairs and their departments—were busy taking stock of the state of progress of their projects.

Talking to The Independent, the Prime Minister’s press secretary, Ihsanul Karim, said the Premier will start visiting different ministries and divisions from this month to review the ongoing development projects.

“She will give the necessary directives to the ministers, secretaries and the officials concerned during her visits to the ministries and divisions,” he said.

A number of mega projects, including the Padma Multipurpose Bridge (PMB) project, Rooppur Nuclear Power project, Paira seaport, the coal-fired large power projects of Matarbari and Rampal, metro rail and LNG terminal projects, are currently under way. All these mega projects have been taken up by the Sheikh Hasina government and these are being implemented as the government’s fast-track projects. In 2015, too, Sheikh Hasina held meetings with the bureaucrats after visiting different ministries and divisions of the secretaries. The Awami League-led Grand Alliance has formed the government for the fourth time, and aims to make Bangladesh a middle-income country by 2021.
